if you guys have done much customizing of the CDory to store tackle I'd love to see some pics. I'm considering something in the aft dinette seat. I also want to pull the water tank because I have no use for it, thats more space as well. I'm thinking of some sort of dowel for de-spooling line because I keep a few different line weights on board, then there's the plethora of flashers, hooks, etc...

I haven't really customized the boat to store tackle. My tackle needs change depending on what I'm fishing for and I find it easiest to customize the tackle storage to the available spots that pre-exist on the boat and then shift in the gear I need for particular trips. Also, over time, things that I thought were a good idea at the beginning of the season, turned out to be a PITA when I actually made use of them. For example, I found a tackle box that fit perfectly in one of the cabinets on the boat and I bought it. Once I loaded it with all my gear and started using it, I realized that I needed to lift it in an out of the cabinet frequently to really get at what I needed or to be able to see into a give compartment. Eventually, this process of getting out a large tackle box became a pain.
This year, I re-did my tackle storage completely. I went with small, modular storage boxes that are easy to get in and out of storage. I bought two of these simple storage bags from Cabelas. I bought Plano boxes in three different thicknesses to fill the bags. The std. thickness of the plano boxes is 1.75" but there is a thinner and thicker variety. 3-medium size ones are the same thickness as 2 thicker ones and three thin ones replace 2 medium size ones. So I wound up with one bag that had 3 thin and 4 medium and another with 3 medium and 2 thick ones. Small items like swivels, beads and other terminal tackle are in the thin ones, spoons are similar items are in the medium boxes, X-raps, Kwikfish and other large lures are in the thicker ones.

I'll write some more and get some pictures of the setup this weekend.

You two are talking about tackle boxes not fishing boxes.
Pat Mcmanus would recommend just dumping everything into a 5 gallon bucket. When you need something just pick up the clump of lures ect. and turn it around until you find the one you want and pick it off.
Every season starts out in a tackle box but by week six it becomes a fishing box, at least in my world.

I don't fish, so no help there, but on the water tank: just a note in case you might want some water (but also more space).

I removed my water tank to improve the mounting (which was not good), and then of course just after I got that all set, it decided to spring a leak Cry Well, I never cared for the outlet being on the bottom of the tank anyway, so I decided to just get a new tank. But, I decided to hold off until I decide what size/gallonage I really want. So, long story short, I wanted something temporary that was low effort, but I also didn't just want gallon jugs careening around the cabin.

I found that Reliance makes an upright, 6-gallon green water jug (available at Wal-Mart and also seen at a few camping stores) that fits nicely in the same locker. I wanted more capacity, so I got three of them (which fit nicely between the footman loops I had already installed, so they could be strapped down) for 18 gallons, but of course you could do one or two instead, for 6 or 12 gallons.

I got a little fancy, because I wanted to use the foot pump and the new water hoses I'd installed (basically same as originals with a couple of minor routing improvements), so I got a nylon elbow (1/2" male NPT to 1/2" barb) and a PVC adapter (1/2" female NPT to female that fits OD of 1/2" PVC pipe and is intended for gluing), plus a couple feet of 1/2" PVC pipe. I drilled a hole in the flat cap of the jug, fed the threaded end of the elbow through from top to bottom, then threaded the PVC adapter on from underneath to lock the two together. The 1/2" pipe friction fits into the other end of the adapter and works as a dip tube. I had heated up the pipe first with a heat gun and bent it slightly so it would get to the deepest corner of the jug (they sit on a slant naturally due to the hull shape, so there is a deepest corner). Then I ran the usual water supply hose (which I had left long) up to the barbed elbow and hose-clamped it on. There is some slack in the hose, so I can transfer the one modified cap to any of the three jugs (using the unmodified caps to seal the other two). I'll probably fill them by bringing a hose into the boat (carefully), but they could also be removed for that task.

Okay, long-winded (guess I should post a few photos), but perhaps it might be useful if you want, say, a 6-gallon water capacity that doesn't take up much of the locker (efficiently, the top of the tank comes nearly to the top of the locker). Also, it's something you could easily take or leave home, depending on the trip situation.

if you have a thread on that I'd like to see it. as I was reading our post I was remembering that the water tank already has the work done externally and the last time I considered pulling it I considered the fact that the groundwork is already there (external fill spot, sink, pump, etc) and rather than remove, I'd rather upgrade (thinking long term/resell). I had forgotten that until I read your post.

I can relate! BUT, I'd like the boat to feel like a luxury motorhome when boaterhoming, and like a Sea Tank ready for combat when fishing. makes organizational upgrades a must. two weekends ago while out, my wife made me coffee (french press) and an amazing breakfast (eggs, sausage, etc) while I was aft trolling for fishes. the more organized and pleasant I can keep the inside the more inclined she is to do such things Thumbs Up

I haven't written anything up yet, but I'll see if I can get some photos/better description up in my "Sunbeam ~ 22 Cruiser" thread. I'll try for this evening.

(Too, if you're not looking for flexibility in number of gallons, removability, etc., there are "permanent" small tanks that can be installed like the big one was but taking up much less space.)

Hope I'm not hijacking the thread, but discussion has turned to the water tank.
I have the standard 18 gal tank on my 22 and am happy with it. I still find lots of storeage all around it.
On the right side, all my flares and emergency stuff sits nicely wedged, and is handy for quick access.
At the front, I keep bottles of oil and fuel stabalizers etc.
On the left side, shopping bags and garbage bags fit nicely.
On top of the tank sits a kitty litter tray (new one), fits perfectly. You can get a lot of stuff in it and it slides out easily when you want something. Can not go anywhere either while underway.
So yes, the water tank takes up room but there is a lot of other stuff you can store there as well.

Martin.

I think one thing I would like is a sliding drawer above the tank that revealed even more stuff below. something that actually slides completly out, either under the dinette or into the isle.

For hootchies and pre-tied leaders, I use these Finsport tackle wallets. One medium size one holds many pre-tied hootchies, one holds a ton of hootchies that are not pre-tied and a small one holds pre-tied leaders for tomic plugs. Since I have hand rails on the inside of the cabin, I use long rubberized gear ties to hold the leader spools below the rails. These are twisted around the hand rail at one end, leader spools are added and the other end is twisted to the hand rail. I have 4-6 different size leaders hanging there.

For the few items I need most often - bead chain swivels, sampo swivels and pre-tied salmon leaders - I have a couple of "Get Storganized" snaptainers attached to a bracket on the ceiling on the port size just inside the aft cabin wall.

That system has been working well for me this season and I have far less tackle mess in the boat than in previous years. It take discipline to not wind up with a mess in a 5 gallon bucket (or similar) but at the end of each fishing day, I rinse all the tackle in fresh water, let it dry and restow it prior to the next day. On occasion, I toss something in a ziploc bag for storage at a future date and I may wind up with a large ziploc with many smaller ziplocs in it to be sorted through in the future. But I never allow myself more than one 1-gal ziploc bag of unorganized tackle at a time.

thanks Roger, and I agree on the discipline... but after a while when looking at lures I start to see dollar signs attached. I look at a tackle box and I see a small nest egg contribution Mr. Green so I start to treat this stuff a little more kindly every year, haha.

Roger - do you have a pic of your snaptainer setup? Which of their many systems did you get?

Mike,

I bought a lot of their stuff - Fisheries Supply in Seattle carries it, I haven't installed all that I purchased. Here's an image of the containers I put in for tackle. The window straight in front is the aft port side window the window to the left is on the aft bulkhead. The shiny surface below is the top of my convection oven.

I think I used an "A8" bracket that is about 11 3/8" long. The small container has two trays in it and holds frequently needed terminal tackle. The bigger bin stores pre-tied salmon leaders, the occasional pre-tied hootchy and my fishing licenses. I also installed a similar system on the roof of the head to store toilet paper and coffee filters (the latter are used as liners when defecating in the composting toilet). The plastic containers keep the TP and filters dry and in out of the way but in easy reach where they are needed.

That looks like a good set up. i will look into getting some of those as they look to be handy storage. How did you mount yours?
