The spin Doc, Jr Buckwheat & I found the fishing to be poor in the river the last few days. We ventured outside to play around the CR for a bit one day but no luck....I fear my fishing MoJo has left. It was a foggy dog. We did see a few C-brats out and about.....and had a durn good time inspite of the poor fishing.....best of luck to youz this weekend

Today's the day we should have gone, it looks like. The reports sound flat calm - 1 wind wave, 3 swell at 14 seconds. The Ilwaco channel can get rougher than that. Right now, this very minute, we could be rowing across the CR bar. But, no, I am staying home this weekend. Lazy today and busy tomorrow. Just as well - if Lyle can't catch 'em, they ain't gonna get caught. Then on the other hand, I just saw Lynn Marie on here. They must have limited the boat and got home early. Starting next Sunday, I am fishing for a week.

Mike, you lucky guy...we're envious of you fishing for a week! By that time, the river should pick up. We're glad we got to meet you...and Tim and Judy...nice waving -- Hope we get to meet and chat soon. We really lucked out this week -- we didn't fish Wednesday as this was our travel day, first time to solo launch and drive the boat. Steve saved it from a wind-driven bounce on the bridge as he pulled it off the trailer (he said the only thing he thought was he didn't want to hear what I might say if he bashed it Smile)

We fished Thursday and got nada -- saw about 3 netted. Friday, we fished alllllll day, only saw a couple netted. Steve had wanted to come in around 3 but I told him please, no, we're going to catch a fish. Most everyone had gone in and about 5 - 5:30 we hooked a coho at 35 pulls on a red and white and a chinook at 9 pulls on cut plug...go figure!

Friday morning...back out and I picked up a chinook just off Chinook a ways, and nothing more for the day.

The boat was great! We had a battery issue from running all kinds of stuff we shouldn't (cooler and fan), but recovered as soon as we turned on the start battery and ran the motor for awhile. Steve's doing great at docking and loading and unloading -- we're rookies, but no dings, no dents ... so far Smile

Now to do a search on this site to see how to get that deck clean! We tried 409 both inside and cockpit, but that doesn't seem to get it done....

We plan to go back next Saturday for a day trip (can't stay cuz we gotta work -- we had a discussion about that this morning -- we both wished we didn't have to come home today and go back to work). What a great trip!

With gas prices so high I'm waiting for some positive reports before I head down. Tyboo Mike, I don't suppose you've heard anything from Raven Dave? Sawdust pile?

I haven't seen Raven Dave yet this season. I really think he knows something the rest of us don't and is waiting for some kind of sign. If there are two people on his boat and five fish in the river, he can catch four of them. And brother Heron doesn't even have his boat in the water yet. Something's going on, and those are the folks to watch.

Now the CatyMae - that boat can fish! They pulled three nice fellers out over the last couple of days, and there were only four fish in the river all week.

Probably half the river fish I have seen on the dock so far have been what I would consider Tule. The ocean fish are pretty, and getting bigger, but they are scattered all over. Most people who limit outside are doing so 8 to 12 miles south of the entrance buoy. By the time I am ready to get started in earnest, the salmon will be gathered at the mouth and ready to be caught right outside the line. I hope so, anyway, because I don't like the drive back from Seaside.

I have three more days to work, then one day of business junk, two days for the state fair, and then nine days to fish. My dad is dragging his camp trailer down to my back yard, and we need to get him some smokers.

We saw the Raven out on the river one late afternoon...that was it...sure wish we lived close enough to go out for a couple hours in the evening .... the CatyMae has made us drool much heavier over retirement -- we might just have to speed it up Wink

Raven Dave really has the handle on the Yellow Can>Megler Bridge technique, Oregon and Washington sides. His method is so un-orthodox that I have trouble embracing it. He trolls so fast that his downrigger cable is at 40 degrees. When we fish the same area I'm amazed at the ground he covers.

Mike;

That's great! Nothing like a visual...

Pictures really do spek a 1,000 words!

We thought we'd get to come over for a day trip this weekend, but now (since the fish are in...dagnabit!) we won't make it cuz we're making CatyMae's new home (gotta get the gravel leveled in preparation for the construction party next weekend). DRAT!! But there's always next year, I guess Crying or Very sad

Go now! I see on ifish.net Bill Monroe's saying the nets are flying -- and others are posting proof positive pictures...the fish are in and biting -- Good luck and have a great time!

CatyMae n Steve, BINGO!, Read the article this afternoon. I'll be headin' down Monday or Tuesday. I like to launch at Warrenton and fish the sawdust-pile. If I'm going outside I'll overnight at Ilwaco. Otherwise I'll fish the river for chinooks. I sure hope Raven Dave is around.

If you look at this thing, they are calling for 12 - 18 foot swells outside on Wednesday. It is a good thing the fish are coming into the river!

Raven should be around. Heron is floating now, too.

We won't get started until Sunday. I have informed the wife and kids that it will be a family fishing day, and ordered them to go with me. We'll see how that works out. Might be just me, and sleeping on the boat besides.

Monday morning maybe a short river trip with my dad, and then business to tend to in the afternoon. Starting Tuesday, it's me and old dad for a week.

We'll catch you out there! Looking forward to it.
