40 ABOVE ZERO
Italian and English cars won't start. People in the Midwest drive with
the windows down.

easier to get up on your water skis, get in that last boat trip.
20 ABOVE ZERO
Texans don coats, thermal underwear, gloves and hats. Michiganders
throw on a flannel shirt.
15 ABOVE ZERO
New York landlords finally turn on the heat. People in the Midwest
have the last cookout before it turns cold.
ZERO
People in Miami die or return to Cuba. Midwesterners close the windows.
10 BELOW ZERO
Californians go to Jamaica. People in Wisconsin get out their Winter coats.
25 BELOW ZERO
Hollywood disintegrates. Girl Scouts in the Midwest sell cookies door to door.
40 BELOW ZERO
Washington, DC runs out of hot air. People in the Midwest let their dogs
sleep inside.

Santa Claus abandons the North Pole. New Englanders get frustrated because
"the caah won't staaht, betta staaht a faah."
275 BELOW ZERO
All atomic motion stops (Absolute zero on the Kelvin scale). People in the Midwest
finally stop saying "cold 'nuff for ya?"
500 BELOW ZERO
Hell freezes over. No one in Michigan is surprised because it explains why the
Detroit Lions play in Super Bowl LIX.

On the more serious side: Pensacola has two nights this week at 18*, and expects 2 to 4 inches of snow tomorrow. We will not be driving--even though I have a 4 x 4, and we both have considerable experience driving on snow and ice. Both our ages and the lack of skills of others will keep us off the road.
Yes we turn on the heat at 68*. Long johns at 40 degrees, with wool beenie and wool watch cap, wool scarf!
I am amazed by my neighbor from St. Louis, Mo. wears shorts and short sleeve "t" shirt when it is 40* _________________ Bob Austin

My apology. The intent was not to make light of the serious cold weather
occurring now.
Certainly and sadly, this deep freeze is spelling misery, or worse for many.

We now have 9" of snow on the ground. The street is full of drifts. Not able to upload photos for some reason. Temp is 23*. I know that is "mild summer weather" for some of you. But not to us Warm Weather Folks....
Everything is shut down- all stores, most gas stations. Not sure if EMS still running or not? We have supplies for 90 days plus our Natural gas 18 KW generator, which runs everything in the house. |

During my bus driving days Bob, I had kids on the bus in shorts at temps close to zero. You know them hormone raging boys trying to show how tough they are to the hormone raging girls. lol. (But damn, the bus seats are vinyl. That had to hurt to sit on those with bare legs.) But it's not uncommon to see adult males in shorts below freezing. I don't get it, unless they can't afford heavier clothes... In the mean time, while you guys are getting all the snow, I don't think we've had more than 7" all winter so far, and 5 of that came in one storm in time for Christmas that melted within a week. I'm in Door County this week, no snow on the ground here either, and a high of -9. Yes, Minus 9. (Low -14). |

We have been having an unusually warm winter here in the Great White North. Temperatures have been often been above freezing and we do have a lack of snow. This cold snap did bring our temperatures down to -30C (-22F) the other night. Now at temps where some of you are putting on your long underwear, some of us up here are putting on our shorts. I must say that I'll take a few months of really cold weather and snow, so long as the skiing is good, over a few months of sweltering heat and humidity. I hope you survive and can be back on the water with your C-Dorys soon. The ice should be off the lakes here sometime in May and we can put the snowshoes away and get the boats out of storage. _________________ Peter & Judy Haase

the original post is pretty good...maybe a little exaggerated though.
I've worked a winter in sub zero temps in Evanston WY and a summer in the sweltering, hellish, heat in the Sahara by Sabha Libya and believe, like the majority of folks, that hell freezing over is much better than actual hell.
speaking of hell, I feel bad for the folks in the LA area, what a nightmare _________________ Ken

Yes, my daughter is indirecly affected by the fires at the school where she teaches. It had the red fire retardant dumped on all of the buildings and outdoor spaces. The fire engines kept it a few hundred yards from the school. All of the classrooms had to have decontamination for the smoke and some ash. The power is out for all of that area, and estimated 6 months before the grid is completely restored in that area. They are bringing large diesel generators to power the school They are hoping to return to campus next Monday, but the Sepulveda or Sunset fires may affect her route to the school.
In Pensacola, we are up to about 40* and much of the snow on the road has melted. We still have snow on our ground which our Poodle loves. The rool snow is falling off, the Pool cage is damaged. In Mobile Alabama the Arena roof collapsed from the weight of the snow, an the arena destroyed. All services except EMS, Emergency Fire or Sheriff are closed. The 3 hopsital Emergency rooms are open, and several free standing emergency rooms are also open. All public transport is closed. Interstate 10 was closed, NAS Pensacola and the Airport are closed, except emergency flights.
We are staying in until all of the ice is gone from the roads. |

here's a couple of free driving tips that I've picked up living in a ski resort town.
tip#1. when the winter snow starts flying and the roads are slick you want to drive as fast as possible. Try to keep the speedo at least 5mph over the speed limit, 10 if you have a 4x4. Common sense dictates that the faster you go, the less time you spend on the road. Less time on the road lessens your odds of getting in a wreck.
tip #2. When the weather turns artic you want to make sure you have a full tank of fuel. It's best to warm up the vehicle and remove all window frost before launching. Once buckled up and the vehicle warm, head that sumbitch south were it's warm and dry |

Cokeville, Wyoming, where we live is about 70 miles north of Evanston, Wyoming, where Ken mentioned he worked in the frozen north one year & Cokeville on average runs at least 10 degrees cooler than Evanston. Overall it’s been a much warmer than usual winter, but this week, I needed to drive the 50 miles to Afton, Wyoming for a hernia surgery & it was a very cool -25 F. Still much better than being in Southern California.
