Too often, patients in Germany undergo preventable medical procedures and surgeries, according to a study by the Bertelsmann Foundation published on Tuesday.
The researchers said unnecessary drug prescriptions, tests and surgeries cause harm and additional stress to patients, as well as wasting valuable resources that may be urgently needed elsewhere.
There are too many unnecessary operations
In Germany, about 70,000 thyroid surgeries are performed annually. The study showed that in 90% of these operations there were no signs of malignant tumors.
"With a better diagnosis, many of these operations could have been avoided," the researchers said.
During ovarian surgery, the presence of malignant disease was confirmed in only 10% of women who underwent surgery.
According to the study, these mostly unnecessary surgeries are going ahead because many women are advised to undergo screenings even if they are not at risk, which is contrary to medical recommendations.
A number of drugs have also been rewritten, in particular H2 blockers for gastric acid, the scientists noted. About 70% of these prescriptions were made without patients being properly informed about the drug, the study says.
These data were collected for the Bertelsmann Foundation by the Berlin Institute for Medical and Social Research and the Rheingold Institute for Market Research in Cologne, who conducted in-depth interviews with 15 doctors and 24 patients.
The problem of attitude
According to the researchers, a large number of unnecessary procedures are mainly related to the expectations and attitudes of doctors and their patients. For example, more than 55% of respondents said that each form of treatment is better than expecting more certainty.
Brigitte Mohn, a member of the board of directors of the Bertelsmann Foundation, said that the study showed the need to combat oversupply in the German medical sector. One way to do this, she said, would be through a campaign like Wise Choice, which began in the U.S. and Canada and is currently active in more than 20 countries. It aims to promote better dialogue between doctors and their patients about certain procedures as a way to eliminate unnecessary medical care.
"This should also be more strongly supported in Germany in the interests of patient welfare", - said Mon. 1xbet |
