Tin Can Weatherfax

Great article. The guy shows how to input and display weatherfax from any SSB radio. And tells you where to get the software at a reasonable price. Wonderful.

When we went cruising, I installed a full-up SSB transceiver. While it kept us from going crazy by allowing us to talk to people when in the middle of the ocean, its greatest benefit was weatherfax. Like the guy says, you can't always get VHF. In the old days (last year?) you had to buy a demodulator and run the signal in through the RS-232 port. Those guys are now out of business, since all computers now have an audio input port (microphone,) AND no serial input port.

However, the software to process the fax signal and display it is expensive. $240 for WEATHERSTATION 2000, which has kept me from using it on Journey On. Now it's available as shareware, and you provide the cheap SSB receiver. For those of us on the left coast, the Pt. Reyes station is available from Mexico thru Canada.

I think it's great, Judy's gonna get a SSB receiver for Valentines Day. She's the one who used to understand those @#$% faxs anyway.

Thanks, Roger for the post, just what I've been looking for.

Boris
