BRM-2 For Self Launch

Has anyone used a BRM-2 bow roller to self launch a Bruce type anchor on a CD-22? I kind of like that as an alternative to the pivoting bow roller. [/b]

Check out page 4 of the MOOSE album. I too, am not crazy about the pivoting bow roller so I modified a BRM-2 to self-launch by adding a second roller. I also added a stainless strap to keep the anchor from flying off the roller and gouging the topsides. Although I initially had a Bruce anchor which I did like, it's tough to get one to self-launch because of its straight shank, so I switched to a slightly larger Delta. It was a lot of screwing around, but it works great.

My understanding is that the larger Bruces will launch with just the BRM mount.

They have a very low center of gravity which doesn't require the pivoting mount to drop their center of mass down further below the roller's static position.

The smaller ones, particularly with heavy chain restricting the movement of their shanks, may not do so. Then you do the trick Al (Moose) did, and add a second roller near the back of the mount to tip up the back end of the anchor in the rest position and make the Bruce's center of gravity sufficiently below the mount to trigger the self-launch.

As always with anchors, rodes, windlasses, and related gizmos, some experimentation is required to fine tune the system before it finally works!

Try adding a parallel air hose and bladder along side your ground tackle set up. A $3000 high pressure two stage compressor should be good down to 600 feet (18 atmolsphers of pressure, or about 270 psi).

Maybe Don can get you a deal on a Navy surplus ship/submarine flotation bladder usually intended for salvage work. You might even be able to aid some bait lines to it and go fishing for some of those Barn Door Halibut you have up there!

In case the aforementioned is beyond your technical, engineering, or financial resources, check out the anchor ball and ring loop system frequently used up there to raise anchors from great depths without the use of a windlass.

I know you'll come up with something workable and probably ingenious, as you Alaskans are noted for finding non-orthodox, make-do ways to avoid every day, common sense solutions.

Tom, not sure but I think you would have to do something extra to the BRM2 to have it self launch (like add an extra roller).

I have the BRM4, the same roller they're using on the new Tomcat, on my 22 CD, and it self launches. It's probably a little over kill for the 22 CD but I like the extra beef and it works good. I'm currently using a Delta Fast Set with it but it worked good with the 22# Bruce as well.

The days are getting longer, before you know it spring will be here.

Oh yeah, Dan has got a good point...........I guess? Just have the Missus launch and retrieve. You reckon Paige has got Dan spoiled?

Thanks for the tips. When I look at the bow on the 22 I see where the BRM-2 would be close to working or not working. Since I will be using a Powerwinch, the chain and shank will be higher than Al's set up with the vertical windlass but may still need an additional roller.

We'll see. Mark, the days are getting longer so it will be soon. First trip may be the Homer Winter King Derby in mid March.

For self retrieving, Joe had a good idea, but alternatively, you could use a manually inflated vest with a line parallel to the rode. Just pull on the line, the vest inflates and the anchor comes up. Just have to keep a supply of CO2 cartridges. The only thing that might come up is that in more than 80 feet or so of water, the CO2 maybe have enough pressure to inflate the vest against the water pressure. I'm sure you will be able to work out the actual capability of life vest anchor retreival system. One other thought, you might want to put CO2 cartridges in each fluke so you blow the anchor off the bottom while inflating the vest.

I'm not a bad influence, blame my lovely bride, she's the one that insisted on the windlass. She saw what you were putting Paige through, launching and retrieving the anchor and didn't want me to follow your example. Here, all the time I thought Betty was being nice to me and it was really a matter of self preservation.

Looking to upgrade my bow roller on the 18. The little AR4 that came on it is just not quite big enough for me. I've noticed that a bunch of folks have upgraded from the stock 22 roller (BRM2??) to the tilting ones for ease of self launching. Since I don't see a windlass in my near future that is not an issue for me. Anybody out there that has one they have removed sitting around and is willing to part with it for a reasonable price?

The standard bow roller on the CD-22 has always been the URM-2, to my knowledge anyway. Joe.
