Is anyone using the Wavve Boating App on their iPhones for planning or navigating? If so what are your thoughts? |

I looked at Wavve vs Aquq Maps and Navionics which I do use.
I would not use Wavve. No maps in some areas like Lake Powell, not as detailed as either as above. I see some mistakes in our local waters. No Active Captain.
For simpler and graphic/with Active Captain (dated) Aquamap.
Detailed and accurate: Navionics. I run both on I pad and Navionics on Ray Marine MFD. _________________ Bob Austin

I use Aquamap. I joined and am still learning to make routes up.
When using Aquamaps It really sucks with trying to know what land area you are near. Tho you can see yourself on the map its often not possible to clearly see adjacent town names and Highway routes. This often makes me keep Google or Apple Maps open on another device.
I guess I've found Wavve to be unremarkable. Thought I'd ask in case I was missing something.

What about Windy.com?
I've been using it for years, tons of info there besides wind and waves. |

AlainP Funny you should suggest that as I was also going to ask, soon, What weather map people were using. This may be the answer but I'm not there yet.
The reason I brought up Wavve is that I keep seeing adds for it and I would like to have a backup for Aquamaps. When I was on the St Johns River I only used Aquamaps and found it very easy for daily use. It is a little confusing to me how to save/erase trip routes but it is certainly east to plot a day trip.
It seems that many of you are using Navionics. I don't know Navionics but understand it is very accurate. At this point my "MFD" is a cell phone and an older Apple Tablet, so not much going on there. |

Windy might be great for landlocked stuff, it is nearly
100% wrong on Alaska N. gulf coast & Cook inlet marine forecasts.
Good old N.O.A.A. is always pretty darn close! |

We use Windy for going out of Newport, Or. and have found it to be very accurate but in the San Juans and Gulf Islands, not!
NOAA buoy reports for swells/wave height are the most comforting in PNW Strait crossings and when the wind shows 10 knots or less. _________________ Gary F

Yes a simple back up on the iPad is what I need. I'll look into it.

This is something I want to learn to use for Chesapeake and other bay crossings, Thanks!

Windy's accuracy might vary by region,
I have been using it as I said for many years to plan my crossings from mainland Mexico to Baja California and back. I would give it a 95% accuracy for that stretch of water. I also have used it in BC (Salish Sea) and Lake Superior with similar satisfactory results. Now..Lake Powell, not so much. |

When using "Windy" remember that there are different models which are used and in some apps you can change the model. Some of those are more accurate than others. This is best on display when tracking hurricanes and predicting the path and wind velocity.
We used to have to use the weather fax charts to make our own prediction prior to the internet and computer models. Of course you could pay for a service to make the predictions for you. |
