Lewmar Delta 14 pound anchor vs. the 22 pound Delta. After several failed attempts to hold in silty (as opposed to sandy) bottoms, we now permanently use the 22 pound Delta. Physically, they look very similar in size, but believe me: that extra 8 pounds makes a big difference in anchor retrieval.
Close up of 14# Delta anchor. It has 25' 1/4" HT chain and 200' of 1/2" Anchor line. On June 14-15, we used this arrangement for the first time. It sets easily by hand, and it releases easy by hand. It held fast in the 10-foot muddy river bottom, with winds around 5 knots, and large power cruisers passing by. This confirms that did not need a windlass for new England, where the waters are shallow (as opposed to the PNW, where a windlass is desireable.) REVISION: We no longer use the 14 pound anchor, because it does not hold in silt. We now use a 22 pound Lewmar Delta, which I think would benefit greatly from a windlass.
