Follow the 1" Black hose to the Black plastic housing in the center of the Photo. This is the thermostat housing. The brass fitting below the 1" hose will be plugged with salt. Remove the brass fitting and clean it and the passageway into the block.

Follow the 1" Black hose to the Black plastic housing in the center of the Photo. This is the thermostat housing. The brass fitting below the 1" hose will be plugged with salt. Remove the brass fitting and clean it and the passageway into the block.
On the Port engine, I had to drill out the salt from this housing with a 1/4" drill! Salt deposits are visible in the Thermostat mounting areas.
There are the two thermostats. Note they are different. The silver colored one goes forward of the brass colored one. I pulled these and soaked them in Salt-Away. The brass fitting next to the temp sender is the one that gets plugged with salt.
A B&D Workmate does make a great stand for the lower case. Note prop is removed for this job.
The black tube is the speedo tube. Disconnect it BEFORE dropping the lower case.
After removing the other six bolts, the lower unit will separate with a little persuasion from a pry bar.
