The dates indicated that some of the people buried here could have been born here. Canada had a "residential school" requirement that removed native children from the traditional villages (in this case, they were sent to Gold River). The parents and families followed, and the traditional town sites were abandoned.
A cemetery was started when the original "burial" practices were banned.
Some newer markers harkened back to old times.

In the back of the church is the harbor master's office, usually charging a $5 docking fee. There were more important things going on and the office was empty.

Archaeological research showed occupation for over 4,000 years. It was the "capital" for 17 Nootka tribes. This 15' cedar carving of a welcoming "seeker" faces the Pacific.
