    I'm Semi-Unretired For The Winter

Things are going great here. -25 this morning, good weather for making ice. Wolf trapping is starting, everything else starts shortly. I've had some ducks around but with the temps last night I think they headed south. I've got 6" of snow so I can travel except for some open water.

    I'm Semi-Unretired For The Winter

For the most part I'll be by myself but the boss will fly in a few times and may have a few other visitors. I've been so busy getting ready for winter I haven't taken many pics yet. Yes, I'll be toting a gun, the country is open enough that should get a number of wolves and coyotes with a...

    I'm Semi-Unretired For The Winter

Well I'm here. Everyone else flew out yesterday. I flew over the country for an hour yesterday and in a nearby lake the lake trout were spawning. There were thousands of fish schooled up along a 3-400 yard long beach. It looked like salmon pilling up ready to go up a crick. Most of the fish...

    I'm Semi-Unretired For The Winter

After 26 years I retired from the USAF this spring and my wife was adament that I find another job this fall after spending the summer fishing between North Pole and East cape Baja. I finally found the job I was looking for. I will be spending the winter trapping in the Wrangle Mtns. I will...

    Pot Puller - Redux

Pat, I agree about the colapsable pots. I made some colapsable pots and it sure was nice to have them folded for storage but were a pain to work with. I went back to standard pots. I've made 20-30 pots in the last 5 years, trying different designs, looking for the perfect pot. I'm not there...

    Pot Puller - Redux

It must have been a weak motor because I can't imagine people buying them if that's how they usually perform.

    Sea Monsters

I've have friends who have had harbor seals and sea lions jump into their boats. The sea lion was escaping killer whales and the seal was escaping a shark of undetermined species. I have been fortunate that my boat so far has been pinniped free. I did however have a mighty scary latenight...

    New Lazarette Covers

As usual I'm a little confused. I don't have any problems with my lazerette hatches leaking, have different type hatches been used throughout the years? Is this only a problem with newer boats or have I just not been paying attention?

    Pot Puller - Redux

I spent a week on a rental boat a few weeks ago and it had an Ace pot puller on it, WOW, what a week machine. I got quite a workout helping the ace pull the 5 pot string, I think I put more work into it than the Ace did. I'm sure glad I went with the Powerwinch on my boat.

    Pot Puller - Redux

CaptMac, We use pots to fish for Spot shrimp which live in rocky areas. I fish the pots from 300-600'. I've never heard of using pots to fish warm water shrimp but see no reason why it wouldn't work. People use all kinds of bait, from canned and dry cat food, commercially prepared bait...

    Where's the shrimp?

Yeah our shrimp are deep, I usually set from 300'-600'.

    Where's the shrimp?

I've been shrimping in PWS for 8 years and in the last 3 years I have noticed a decrease in shrimp numbers and a noticeable reduction in average size. In almost all the places I set I am the only person to set there as far as I know, so I don't think localized overfishing is the problem. I...

    Pot Puller - Redux

I use a Powerwinch designed as a pot puller with a capstain. I made a bracket so it attaches to the gunwale and built a fairlead. It works well but you will need a bit of ingenuity to make it work. The whole process would be much easier if you mount it permanently but I wanted it to be...

Salmon fishing in the salt - technique and methds

I think the teasers and rigging would need to be chosen with low drag in mind. I very seldom troll for salmon, I just thought it would be fun to try and a good tool for those times when I needed to fill some limits when the salmon were too deep to cast to and too spread out for chunking to work.
