    Backup chart plotter system

The various iPad solutions (Navionics etc.) are all good. I have an older Garmin eTrex handheld GPS that runs on batteries. It also accepts the BlueCharts SD card from my chart plotter, which I like.

    At anchor CPAP machine

I’m interested in this as well. I never use the humidifier, which is good. My pressure is 8.3. I’m using a Respironics Dream Station. Really looking for a solution for camping, on the water etc.

    SOLD - 2006 22 Cruiser "Wee-Bit", $40,000 (Elberta

I'd buy that boat and take it to BC in a heartbeat. I'm just short many thousands of US dollars! Beautiful boat and immaculately upgraded and maintained. All I would need to add is downriggers!

    Nootka!!!

Nootka is a pretty amazingly special place. When the fish are in, they are plentiful and staggeringly easy to hook. You can throw a sock on a hook in the water and you'll catch. First time we went, my son and I were new to the area and pretty new to ocean fishing as well. We fished black...

    Gps with built in antenna

I’ve got a Garmin Echomap 50DV chart plotter on my dash inside my fibreglass pilot house. My boat is not a C Dory, but the pilot house is fibreglass and very similar to many, including the C Dory. Works perfectly and picks up satellites very quickly. I can’t imagine an external antenna would...

What VHF Do You Have Now and Why

I have owned two Standard Horizon fixed mount marine VHF radios and four of their handhelds. They have all been excellent. But, I have to say that the later versions of both handheld and fixed mount radios are even better because SH has simplified the menus for both. It’s easier now to find and...

Solo Anchoring w/ No Windlass Tips?

I’m certainly no expert in anchoring, but I do anchor for halibut fishing here in the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Almost all the halibut fishers use this same system. It avoids precarious walking around the front of the boat, which I would never attempt. Why not just use this system...

    Pure Watercraft Outboard

In Canada, it is reversed. Over 63% of our electricity come from hydro or other renewable non polluting sources. In BC it’s 95%.

    Marinaut Update

I don’t know the reasons, but I definitely agree that room for a kicker is really important. I hope that they can include that, at least as an option.

    Marinaut Update

Where the boats are made matters not; what’s great is that more of this type of boat be made. Simple, practical, fuel efficient and offering weather protection. Sensible craft that are good looking too, although that’s secondary in my opinion. As fuel prices keep climbing, I suspect and hope...

Does anyone know anything about this boat manufacturer?

There are some very highly regarded welded aluminum boat manufacturers in BC. Two on the Island are Silver Streak (in Sooke, where I live)(http://www.silverstreakboats.com) and Lifetimer in Duncan (http://www.lifetimerboats.com). Extremely well built and unbelievably durable, but also very...

Do any brats use marine charts?

My experience mirrors Jim’s. 10 years of boating and fishing the southern coast of Vancouver Island and I’ve never even met a regulatory authority out there!

    Deck core moisture and rot

I have used both SixTen and the System 3 equivalent called GelMagic. I observed no meaningful difference between the two. Both are excellent.

Drain plug - internal or externala?

I don't have a C-Dory yet and my current boat leaves me no internal option as the drain hole is deep in a recessed bilge under the motor well. So outside is the only option. Because of this I use the stainless steel version of this plug. You can twist it in very tightly. So tightly that I...
