Towing a 22' C-Dory Cruiser with 5000lb capacity

How realistic is it to tow a 22' C-dory Cruiser with an AWD vehicle that has a towing capability of 5,000lbs? I am not looking to tow over mountain passes or cross-country. As this will be my primary vehicle, I want something that still gets decent gas mileage when I am not towing. I don't want a pick-up or a gargantuan SUV. Please no uninformed opinions, I need feedback from people that have some experience in this.

I tow mine with a 4Runner without issue, but having towed boats across the country, I might want something more-suited to the task if there were mountains involved.

Depends on what the weight of your boat and trailer is. If it is under 5K# it shouldn't be a problem. My CD22 on an aluminum trailer weighs 4400# with typical contents onboard. I tow it with a R51 Nissan Pathfinder. The Pathfinder tows it fine, but the gas mileage is around 20mpg without the boat (~13 with it).
Whatever vehicle you get, you might want to put air bags in the rear suspension. I find these help the ride a lot when towing.
 
I tow mine all over with a 2008 Toyota 4 Runner. Does a good job. A little squirrely when a big rig passes on the freeway. I do not tow above 65mph. Want to make sure not to blow a wheel bering by towing too fast. I tow the C-Handler up pretty good sized hills in WA. The 4 liter engine can actually pick up speed if you want to put the gas pedal thru the floor.

Maybe in the distance future I might upgrade to a 1500 class tow rig. For now the 4-Runner is doing a great job.

Thanks!! You mentioned having the 4l engine... that's the V6 model rated up to 5000lbs. This is great... a definitive answer! You mentioned being in WA. Same here. My towing would be maybe a dozen times per year, limited primarily to the I-5 corridor between Olympia and Bellingham. With caution, care and an understanding of the limitations, seems like a 5K tow vehicle would be 'adequate'.

That should be no problem with the V6 4 liter engine. I live in SW WA and tow to Astoria and points west. Mainly fish the Columbia River and the Ocean at Ilwaco.

I sure love my C-Dory. I just retired so I get to spend much more time on the C-Handler then the typical Saturday combat fishathon on the rivers around Portland and Vancouver.

I tow my 22' cruiser with a 2007 Honda Ridgeline that has a 5000 lb capacity, and have not had any problems with it. Mileage sucks (11 mpg) when towing. I estimate my towing weight (boat + trailer) is about 4400 lbs.
