Why does my steering stiffen up at speed?

How do I tell if my steering cable is of the “non-feedback” type?

Why does my steering stiffen up at speed?

Thanks for all the helpful replies. I sort of assumed the mechanic who installed the engine also lubricated all the steering swivel points on the motor and transom mount. He *was* very thorough, but I didn’t ask. So I guess I’ll start with that. I do know there are zerk fittings in a few places...

Why does my steering stiffen up at speed?

It’s cable steering with a single cable mechanism behind the helm. Issue has been there since I bought the boat about six months ago. It had an ancient 2-stroke that I had a mechanic replace with a newer (used) 4-stroke. No change in the problem with the engine swap. Previous owner told me he...

Why does my steering stiffen up at speed?

My steering spins just fine at the dock and at low speeds. But once I open up the throttle, the wheel gets very hard to turn — two hands required! What’s going on and how do I fix this?

Mounting battery: Drilling into the floor...?

Is this the Weld Mount you are referring to? https://www.fisheriessupply.com/weld-mount-systems And do you think it would work for a fuel tank?

Karen: Yes, that was us! Glad that trick worked for you, too. Is yours a 16 also?

    most comfortable pfd

I just got a Mustang Khimera and love it so far. Bit different concept. Slim foam flotation with a pull cord for additional inflation. The latter is not automatic — you gotta pull the cord. Also has a manual nozzle to inflate with your breath as a backup feature. Light, slim & comfortable. I...

    Handheld VHFs with GPS/DSC

The automated radio check stations, I believe, are gone from the West Coast. I have used Ch. 16 a few times recently with a prompt reply from fellow boaters and no friction from USCG (after installing a new VHF radio and then a new antenna). Of course, this does not test the MMSI, only the...

Ssobol: Of course that is true and I wasn’t suggesting it as a permanent solution.

    Handheld VHFs with GPS/DSC

I have the Icom M93D, slightly older model with GPS/DSC but no AIS. Great radio. I registered it to get an MMSI number, easy to do online if you’re a BoatUS member. It’s a chunky radio, too big for most pockets, but it has a belt clip. Also you can get an adapter to attach an external antenna...

    C-Dory 22 Accident

There is a lot of confusion about what kind of boat it was. This article describes it as an “aluminum C-Dory”. https://www.newportnewstimes.com/news/o ... a4d0b.html Others describe it simply as a “dory”.

    Moisture control under v-berth mattress

Another vote for Hypervent. We lived aboard fulltime for 2 years on two different boats (30’ houseboat and a 35’ yacht) and used it both times to great success.

Filling holes in the deck in the bilge area

My 1988 16’er had the same blocks of wood screwed to the floor. Maybe they are a factory install? I’m hoping to reuse some to mount a new fuel tank.

    New seats in: 1988 C-Dory 16

Mine has a lock on it, yes. No key for the lock came with my boat so I had to put in a new lock assembly, but that was easy.

    New seats in: 1988 C-Dory 16

That hatch cover is for some kind of built-in tackle box. It has pull-out shelves to hold plastic tackle organizers. Came with the boat; I guess a prior owner installed it. Throttle placement seems OK. I don’t have a lot of seat time with the boat yet, so we’ll see.

    New seats in: 1988 C-Dory 16

It took a while to figure out the right parts to do this, so I thought I’d post all that in case it helps others. I had to find just the right pedestal to fit the existing holes in the floor. In the end, everything was a simple bolt-in and the actual installation only took a few minutes. Seat...

    New seats in: 1988 C-Dory 16

When we bought our boat it needed lots of TLC, especially the seats. The helm seat was filthy and pretty much destroyed, and the other completely missing, including all the mounting hardware. Here’s what we started with — yuck!
