Southeast Alaska 2012 with Jay, Jo-Lee & the Hunkydory

I think the rainbow means it hasn't started yet. Saw one over Auke Bay on our way in today shortly before it started to rain.

    C_Dory aground

There is apparently a hole in the bow. This happened at one of the largest tides of the year. No matter what, there will be some dragging involved, maybe into the mouth of a big landing craft. There is a little more info on Alaska outdoors forums, power boating. A couple more pics too.

Southeast Alaska 2012 with Jay, Jo-Lee & the Hunkydory

J & J, while you were lounging, I made some final preps and got the boat in for a shakedown. I filled up with 12 gal of gasoline for the kicker tank and it was only $4.25 a gal. at the fuel dock. Dint check the diesel price. Sitting out near S. Shelter as I speak watching a lone Orca. Not...

Yeah, I figured you got the brunt of the storm out there given the ugly we had here. Say high to the folks who own that little store and cafe. I had a nice chat with them a couple months ago when they were in town for some surgery I did on their pooch. We often fly animals in from Pelican for...

Southeast Alaska 2012 with Jay, Jo-Lee & the Hunkydory

Looks like you weathered the last couple of crappy days ok and you ought to be tied up at Pelican any second now. That's a nice base for cruising out there. Hopefully you are warm and dry and there will be some nice weather moving through soon. I was going to splash the Mooner yesterday but...

    C_Dory aground

On the Alaska Outdoors Forums today, there is a post with photos of a CD22 that went hard aground in Culcross Passage in Prince William Sound, Alaska. According to the story, the captain fell asleep. Apparently everyone was fine. Couldn't tell who it was. Maybe someone with more savy can...

Southeast Alaska 2012 with Jay, Jo-Lee & the Hunkydory

Jay and Jolee just pulled anchor and left the cove headed for Hoonah after a few cups of coffee. I took a spin on the Mokai and can see one in our future. Had just a nice time with them here and hope to be able to meet up with them somewhere out and about later on.

    Does pilot house get hot.

    Seldom in Alaska.

    Wallas Countertop

I have a 1/2" thick UHMD type cutting board cut to fit in the recess on top of the Wallas that works quite well.

I hear there is Wallas Heat on Hunky Dory. I anticipate a departure to less traveled areas quite soon.

    improving radio reception

Oh yeah. Switching to a 6ddb antenna will probably help.

    improving radio reception

Most likely a bad antenna connector. Radio is only as good as the antenna and it's connections. 20' sounds like a lot of wire on a CD but should still work fine if the wires and connectors are good. Try cutting back your wire and getting a good install on your connectors and see how that...

Southeast Alaska 2012 with Jay, Jo-Lee & the Hunkydory

Hey. Has anyone ever installed twin Wallas heaters? Went for a walk with the dogs along Indian Cape last night and saw Hunky Dory anchored with steam coming out the windows and no activity on board. Threw a few rocks at her but couldn't get close enough to roust anyone. Fingers crossed that...

    Anchor, Chain, Rode

On the CD25 I used a 16# Bruce with 35' of 1/4" chain and 300' of 1/2" nylon three strand. Always worked well for me. I use a Delta on the new boat but have limited experience with it to make any comparison. I keep a Bruce with full rode for a spare on board.

Southeast Alaska 2012 with Jay, Jo-Lee & the Hunkydory

Jolee, You are probably all snuggled in by now but it occurred to me that I have a small 1500w ceramic heater up in the boat cabin. Just grab it out if you want. Jay knows where the keys are. You could have Jay run a few hundred feet of extension cords out to the Hunky Dory from shore. I...

Southeast Alaska 2012 with Jay, Jo-Lee & the Hunkydory

Have a safe drive north. If you get down to Juneau again , give us a call. We have moved since we last saw you a few years ago. We live on Indian Cove now, just a couple miles N of Auke Bay. The cove is located on the W side of Indian Cape, which sits between us and the State ferry terminal...

    Anchor Winch

I think you might end up disappointed with the winch you noted. You really do need chain if you intend to anchor for real. You will also need more rode unless you intend to only anchor shallow while fully awake. A rode locker, especially if sealed off from the cabin is not much to deal with...

Woot ! Ace Line Hauler and *.* watch out dungies !

Oh yea, might want to consider tying that puppy off lest it fall off the gunnel into sixty feet of frigid Valdez Harbor water. Don' ask how I know.

    Natalie Wood's death

We just got back from Maui and on the evening news the last night or two they had a video story with the Splendour and her present owner. He stated that the boat was going to be looked over again for evidence. I believe it was located in Oahu.

    Do I really need Radar?

About seven years ago when I got my first radar, I followed Thataway Bob's advice and used the radar in active mode all the time when underway and was real happy to have done so when I needed it in fog or to run at night. I too found that many times I would see other vessels on radar before...
