    Nootka Sound Chinook

I think the Chinook are running late this year, so I believe there will still be a lot of fish up and down the island next week. Plus there should be some coho in the area. I heard reports of 10-12 pound coho being caught outside Nootka already. You can check reports for Nootka or Barkely here.

    Nootka Sound Chinook

I launched at Gold River. The prices for launching and parking have gone up this year. I launched on Saturday and retrieved on the following Friday. It cost me $65 to launch and park along the road; it would have been $95 inside the fenced area. The attendant said they (First Nation)...

    Nootka Sound Chinook

Just finished cleaning up from my annual Nootka Sound trip. Fishing was tougher this year; didn't get our possession limit until the last day. We rounded things out with a few rockfish to eat with chips. Because of the high winds offshore, we only got out one day for halibut and lings, but...

    Adventure in Winter Harbour

Sounds like a great trip, Peter. Sorry to hear you didn't find any Chinook, but bottom fish are some great groceries. I leave for Nootka this coming Friday. I hope to find some lings up there, along with halibut and salmon. A lot of people have been pretty worried about the late run. Even...

Ramp, Marina and Lodging in Portland

If you want to be right in the thick of things city-wise, look for something on Hayden Island. You can cruise the Willamette, Multnomah Channel, as well as the Columbia. Downtown Portland is on the Willamette, and there's some decent free city moorage there close to a lot of sight seeing and...

    Starter Problems 2007 Mercury 115 EFI 4-Stroke

It's the solenoid. Mercs are notorious for having bad solenoids. I've replaced mine twice already. If I remember correctly, Bootleg Hootch had problems with his, as well. It's a Mercury thing.

    downrigger setup

I was really speaking tongue in cheek when I said the bottom tracking was a gimmick. I'm a diehard Scotty fan, and I know Tom is a diehard Cannon fan. Those Cannons definitely have their place, and they offer some cool features, but none of which fit my style of fishing. If I fished...

    downrigger setup

I'm not a certified downrigger engineer, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night. Braid vs wire: braid all way if you're fishing salt water at any appreciable depth. Less blow back from thinner diameter and no worry of salt corrosion. Cable probably lasts forever in WI fishing...
