Tomcat owners, your checklist for winterization?

Matte, Deep down in my co-pilot's cabinet, behind where the fridge would be if I had one, I found a folder of instructions hitherto unnoticed, which included the full Wallas manual as well as the Hot water tank manual. I bet you could get the manual online. If not, PM me your FAX number and I...

    Ranger Winterizing Mod - Part2

Idle up, I like the mods you've made for the winterizing. I did something like that for my last houseboat and it took a very short time to completely ensure all lines were protected from freezing. However, your work looks very professional... unlike my past attempts. I see what the dealer was...

    Ranger Winterizing Mod - Part2

Looks like you've certainly done some great re-working on that tug! I don't know about this particular setup that you show, but I am thinking that sometimes they put a loop in a line to protect against siphoning. Is that why they put that big loop in? John

    Permatrim---thumbs up or thumbs down?

Yes, Joe, I have had several jet boats. The last one had twin engines, but had absolutely no steering control once the throttle let off. Docking it was like throwing a boulder at the float and crossing your fingers! As mentioned, I can steer the TomCat adrift without power for over a hundred...

    Boat lighting

In response to the earlier mention of difficulty in reading the buttons on the Raymarine displays: Wear a white T shirt and get your belly up close to the display. The light from the display will reflect off the T-shirt and you can read the button letters. If you have yet to develop the belly...

    Permatrim---thumbs up or thumbs down?

Spike, The permatrims definitely allow better steering while gliding thru the water with no power. Like you, I had sailed for years and really felt lost with so little control while gliding/drifting without power on a power boat. Even the TomCat 255, which I assume is more difficult to turn...

The Cruising Adventures of Wild Blue and crew...

Jim, Sorry to hear about your sump problems, but glad that you two are again out there on the front lines discovering all the various pitfalls awaiting unsuspecting cruisers! I will check out my sump's diaphrams ASAP! With the inevitable water messes that seem to arise in cruising these...

Idea for bottom paint blocks while on trailer

Matt, I am thinking that the TC 255 is built much stronger than my old houseboats which had the "tri-hull" configuration. To bottom paint them, I'd just jack up one side (after stabilizing the trailer and other side) to finish the spots on the supports, then move the jack supports over and do...

    Reliability of WALLAS 85DU/270

Mark, While the total amount of smell with Kleen Heat seems less to me than that of diesel, if you do suffer blowback into the cabin while the stove is running, the Kleen Heat odor is strong, sour, acrid, horrible. I kind of see that as a warning that the exhaust is not working, but I do want...

    Venture series boats

Mike, I will let others give you more details on the Venture/C-Dory comparison. I am thinking the Ventures have a bit sharper entry giving a smoother ride, but need more horsepower due to that. I own a TomCat 255. Depending upon your needs and desires the TomCat may be what you want. It is...

    Reliability of WALLAS 85DU/270

Gene, There was a recent thread on exactly this problem - blowback at speed, etc., - in which they described the clamshell, a source, and the direction to install it ahead of the Wallas' exhaust, not over the exhaust opening. Maybe a search would bring that up for you. I initially suffered...

    Keeping Critters Out

The best way to keep mice, etc., out of that type opening is to spray it lightly with a 'medicated' lube spray called "Mouse Out". It has a bit of mothball odor and was designed to keep rats and mice out of aircraft landing gear. We use it a great deal on our tractors, trucks, motorhomes, etc...

    Engine height w/ Permatrim

Phil, Water runs over my Permatrims at most speeds, but they seem to work well. Was that in the instructions? I don't know if I'd worry much about it if all works well. John

    Reliability of WALLAS 85DU/270

If the 85 DU is the recent two burner model, I think I have one - a 2006 model. I use mine extensively and it has fired on the first try all but one time when the fuel supply hose had lost it's prime. I just pressed on the flexible tank enough to get some fuel up higher and fired up the second...

    Fuel prices...

I agree wholeheartedly, Roger. I bought a Mini Cooper (39 mpg and hoot to drive) earlier this year and it's amazing to go almost 500 miles on a 12 gallon tank of gas, regardless of the price! And parking/traffic is a snap. John

    Fuel prices...

Filled up my diesel motorhome in Argonia, KS, last week for $2.68 per gallon! Gas in Wichita running $1.95 per gallon now, Diesel in town about $2.87. John

Controlling those ~*#+@!% Spiders Inside the Cabin!

My older half sis was an Air Force wife for 22 years and she always put bars of scented soap in with clothes, sheets, etc, claiming that kept bugs and mice out. She also maintained that the soap lasted longer after having dried out before use. John

SO WHAT DID YOU DO WITH OR ON YOUR C-DORY TODAY??

Took the Tom-a-Hawk out for the normal weekend at Grand Lake - 2 nites, 2 days, anchored out, 78 degree daytime high, 45 degree nites... ahhhhh. Wallas fired up for morning heat and coffee with no problems. I anchored out up on the North end where few big boats go, next to the cliffs. Heavenly...

Tomcat owners, your checklist for winterization?

Sorry Matt - cross post... Thanks for that clarification of your situation. I now see what you were up against! John

Tomcat owners, your checklist for winterization?

Matt, The instruction manuals show a pipe plug in the same outlet as our drain valve. One option is for that drain plug to have a long anode attached to it and it is withdrawn with the drain plug - which we do not have. As mentioned above, you have to open the upper right pressure relief...
