120 VAC to 12 VDC water heater conversion anyone?

You guys are great. Thank you for all the great tips. I think I'll take a mix of the ideas provided. We have a house that is 120 years old and is heated by a boiler. We don't often lose power where I live in the PNW, but I can't have those pipes freezing. I've been toying with the idea of...

120 VAC to 12 VDC water heater conversion anyone?

Thanks for the response GC John. I appreciate the words of wisdom and experience. I will take your advice. I already have those things anyways so that'll be cheap and easy. I'm considering a small onboard water maker and was thinking with full fuel and an endless supply of freshwater, the...

120 VAC to 12 VDC water heater conversion anyone?

Hello Brats, I'm reaching out to see if anyone has converted their electric water heater from 120 volts alternation current to 12 volts DC? I see some vanlife people have done this for more self contained camping. Anyway, I see some 12 volt heating elements that would fit my water heater. I'm...

    W.O.T. as engine maintenance?

WOT every once in a while is solid advice. Engines are nothing more than air pumps that use a pretty dirty fuel to spin them. By running them up to max RPM for a short while, the engine is able to blow out a lot of the deposits that can affect performance, as well as get hot enough to burn off...

    Water in port sponson

Yes, the reason I mentioned it, is because of the velocity of water coming into the bait tank via the thru hull water pick up. My bait tank pump was turned off, I had several BLOCKS, not bags of ice in the bait well, we motored out 1.5 hours and the ice was gone. Flat out gone. The boat was new...

    Mounting a crab pot puller

Take it back and get the Scotty. Small, light, powerful albeit a bit slower than the commercial one but the Scotty plugs into a downrigger mount. Customer service is top notch. I've pulled up large shrimp pots offshore in 600' with 900' of line plus anchors. No problems.

    Water in port sponson

I bet it's the bait well pickup. Mine blasts water into the bait well at speed but nothing static. Probably has a leaky line. It's on the port side sponson. If your boat is on a trailer, put some speed tape over the pickup.

Yamaha 150 Engine Maintenance / trouble icon

This may be of no help, but I also have a 2009 F150. One of the engines will flash the engine icon, and when it does, that engine produces no volts. My fix is to shut it down and restart. Sometimes more than once but the icon has always gone away and then the engine starts producing voltage...

    TomCat 255: The Fishbox Problem

TomCat owners, Has anyone been able to solve the issue of the fishboxes filling up with water? Between this boats dismal deck drainage out the scuppers, and the poor seals around the fishboxes (my seals appear to be in good shape), my fishboxes are essentially unusable for keeping fish cold...

Lithium battery house battery charging/alternator overload?

Bob, I'm getting ready to add a 100AH lithium to my house bank. Can you take a moment to explain why a charger like the Powerwerx is better than the Yandina Combiner? https://smartshoremarine.com/products/b ... -batteries From what I read on the Powerwerx, it charges at 14.6, which is about...

TomCat: Permatrims vs 4 bladed prop?

Thanks again for the information Bob. I've followed almost every post you've written on the TomCat almost a decade before I actually bought one. I always enjoy reading what you've written here and THT. I think what I'll do is get a set of props with some serious stern lift for the ocean and...

TomCat: Permatrims vs 4 bladed prop?

Thank you all for your comments. Bob, I do not have any recorded data on my boats performance, only top speed, which is 46 mph. RPM at that time was in the mfr's limits I recall, but I do not recall what that rpm was. I never run top speed. I did have a short conversation with Ken at PropGods...

TomCat: Permatrims vs 4 bladed prop?

I've done a fair amount of reading on this forum as well as The Hull Truth regarding planning catamarans and the use of foils vs 4 bladed props, or both, or simply recupping my 3 blades. I also had a discussion with Ken Reeves of PropGods. I was surprised to hear Ken tell me that I might...

Towing report: TomCat behind a 2019 Dodge half ton/V8 gasser

WA500, I generally do indeed use my F250, but my buddy wanted to help me out by towing with his truck, so we did. We talked about the weight distributing hitch and I might get that anyways. My truck could benefit from it as well. I already have most of the stuff anyways. Adjustable hitch...

Installed a football sized transducer. Airmar TM185M. It's a 1,000 watt medium cone chirp. Hopefully it doesn't slow me down too much!

    Tomcat propellers

I can't help you with you Honda's but can only provide some info on my boat with 2009 Yamaha F150's, 500 hours, no bottom paint. My left engine prop turns counterclockwise, my right engine prop spins clockwise, so opposite of what Bob said is preferred. My boat at 3,500 rpm runs in the mid...

    Supplementing with solar

Can you please share what the Yandina tech told you? 3 days ago, one of their techs told me to go lithium with their Combiner 100L. I'm planning on replacing my Blue Seas ACR and lead acid house battery with a 100L and 100AH LiFePo4 this fall.
