I'd do a non-technical approach, just have someone turn the key to start and then give the starter motor (or solenoid first) a quick tap with a small, metal hammer.

I have 2 tandem Sevylor kayaks, we use them a lot. They're comfortable and stable. However, you MUST buy the rudder accessory ($15 I think) or they won't track worth a #$%&@. 8)

Each of my engines (twins) are hard-wired to their respective battery, therefore switching during running isn't a problem, it is only affecting the house electrics. And...mine is a make-before-break, always have been on all my boats (just like Boris!).
