Honda 90 (carb) starting tips needed

I can't seem to figure out the right combination of choke and throttle when starting this engine when cold. It does start, but it often takes 5-10 seconds of cranking. Fresh non-alky gas, new plugs, wires, coils, etc. Once started it idles perfectly after a minute or so and runs great. It...

Brakes for older EZ Loader trailer for a C-22

As far as why surge brakes instead of full EOH, the answer is basically cost and need. We keep the boat fairly light, and with a van for a tow vehicle, which has pretty good weight distribution, we can hardly tell that the trailer is there at all.

Brakes for older EZ Loader trailer for a C-22

Thanks Steve, that helps a lot. Eastern Marine was pretty sure their UFP brakes would fit, I think they were just being careful. I'll bet it is a Dexter axle. Anyway, think I'll go ahead and order. Thanks for your help and the speedy reply.

Brakes for older EZ Loader trailer for a C-22

I have an older EZ Loader single axle (5200 lb. axle, based on the number stamped on the bearings) trailer that did not come with brakes. I've read all the posts in regard to brakes and I've settled on a UFP hydraulic disk system with a surge acutator. The trailer has an assigned serial number...

Lowrance vs. Raymarine support and reliability

While searching and comparing, I found that Defender is selling a bunch of Lowrance Hook and Hook Reveal models cheap. They do not network and are not touchscreen, but I bought a 7" Hook Reveal with transponder and Navionics Nav+ charts for $360. There's a $100 rebate, so $260 for the unit...

    When to replace fuel tanks

Thanks for the info folks. Two new senders are $120 and 2 new tanks are $500, so $380 more. I think I'll go for the tanks and cross them off the worry list. Patrick: Thanks for the offer on the tank. I'll decline, but contact me if you have time to visit when in Billings. Our C-Dory will...

    When to replace fuel tanks

I was reminded today to be skeptical of 30-year-old parts on my C-22 when my wife reported that we had no steering. Luckily we were only at hull speed and I was able to rig a tiller. The fuel tanks also appear to be original also-brown plastic 20 gallon tanks. Does anyone have experience with...

Thanks for all the info. I think I know enough now to decide.

Lowrance vs. Raymarine support and reliability

Bob - Thanks again for the detail. I am considering the Axiom 7. Do you use AIS? From what I can see in the Raymarine manual, AIS looks a bit like an afterthought. I would like all AIS vessels to overlay on the chart, not just the "dangerous" ones.

Lowrance vs. Raymarine support and reliability

Time to add a chartplotter. I have an older unit that works fine for everything but responds very slowly with the latest Navionics charts. I'll keep it installed as a backup. I also want a unit that will show AIS targets from my VHF via NMEA 2000. I've narrowed the choices down to a Raymarine...

    Fuel filter/ water separator

Thanks for all the info. I didn't realize that the mount, filters and the bowl were so easily interchangeable.

    Fuel filter/ water separator

My new-to-me boat came with a big Racor-type (I think it's a copy-cat) primary filter/water separator. It looks like a Racor 320R-Rac-01, which is rated at 60 GPH. My Honda 90 shouldn't drink more than 10 GPH wide open. Anyway, I need to replace the plastic bowl, which fell off in the hot sun...

    Testing tachometer signal wire

To kcohen4: I'll take the gauges. I sent you a PM. Thanks! To Vic: Thanks for the thoughts on the tilt gauge and on the tach. It does sound like the tilt sender is stuck. The boat had not been in the water for 10 years when I bought it. I'll try your fix. If it's the gauge, it sounds...

    Testing tachometer signal wire

Thanks for the offer. I'll test both this weekend and let you know. It appears that the tilt gauge moves to the "nose down" setting when powered and stays there no matter what position the engine is in, so I may be in the market for both gauges. My engine is a 1997, so I'll need to check if...

    Testing tachometer signal wire

That's just what I need. I'll give it a test this weekend. As usual, thanks a bunch for a speedy and detailed reply.

    Testing tachometer signal wire

My tach shows zero RPM. Engine is a Honda BF90A, tach is a 7000 RPM Honda/Faria. The ground at the tach tests good, the positive at the tach tests good, and the engine shows good charging voltages when running. The dial on the back of the tach is set to "1" which should be correct for this...

Honda BF90 ring gear holder tool

The BF90A that I have is a 1600cc 4 cylinder, which was the basic guts of the 90's Accords. I don't even think they offered a V-6 in those days. I think as Accords evolved, the engine got bigger. Hopefully they still found an automotive use for the 1600, since, in my experience, it was just...

Honda BF90 ring gear holder tool

Followup: I just adapted the tool I had made to do this job on a car a few years ago (ironically a 1996 Accord--same engine as the BF90!). I had to drill some additional holes and buy some longer bolts at the hardware store, but it worked fine. I was happy that the bar I have on it is almost...

    Calculating prop pitch

Our new-to-us C-22 Cruiser with Honda 90 came with a 3-blade 13" aluminum prop. There's no markings on the prop as to pitch. It sounds like I would want a 15" pitch for this motor and this boat. Is there an accurate way to calculate the pitch? We haven't had the boat in the water yet, but...
