    SV Panope Anchor Testing

From the Viking FB page, it seems Mantus is following their design improvements now, too:

    SV Panope Anchor Testing

As was recommended here, I checked out the anchor test videos by YouTuber Steve Goodwin. His channel, named after his boat, is SV Panope: https://www.youtube.com/@Panope I was interested in the 20lb anchor tests (doubtful I'd get one that big, but it was closer to my world than the 45lb tests)...

Installed a Lone Star GX2 anchor winch

Thanks for this. I'm not sold on the windlass vs drum winch, and am considering a deck-mounted box to house either. I'd also be considering 25' feet of chain, followed by X-feet of nylon, followed by Y-feet of dyneema. I am not actively researching these at the moment, and don't know enough...

Installed a Lone Star GX2 anchor winch

The site is far easier since the update/conversion to post pictures-- prior to this it wasn't worth it, ha. You have three options, with the same visuals on a computer as on a phone. Option 1: Copy image from elsewhere (eg, browser tab/window, another application) and paste it into the body of...

MOLLE / PALS panels for storage (borrowing from Jeeps / Overlanders / military)

Much to my surprise, there is not a single mention (per the search anyways) of MOLLE or PALS panels on this forum (said, "molly" like the name). Although the letters don't line up, MOLLE stands for "modular lightweight load-carrying equipment"-- the "O" must have been added; PALS = pouch...

Late 80's 22' Angler repower. Weight concern Tohatsu 90hp

The hull was changed, IIRC, in the 1980s to add more lift in the stern for heavier outboards. It’s been covered here before so search the forum and see if you’re pre/post that change.

Installed a Lone Star GX2 anchor winch

One consideration I read just now, seems a notable mention if one were to "go big" with lots of chain; adding for the discussion: "Don't forget that you have a lot of heavy chain above the center of gravity. That's the main disadvantage of this configuration."

Installed a Lone Star GX2 anchor winch

Hi there. Might you please post a picture of the winch on your boat? Am looking into various mounting strategies trying to preserve deck space, gelcoat, original cleats when possible, etc.. Thank you!

    Bow sprit, Anchor Sprit, more.

This one is inside the anchor locker; person said they'd do it exactly the same next time. There were other pics but I didn't want to share their reg #. But, line goes into the hawes pipe (which Lonestar sells, he said) goes down under the drum and aft, then wraps up and around/forward (ie, drum...

    Bow sprit, Anchor Sprit, more.

Came across this picture on the FB C-Dory Group. It's the same drum winch/ windlass, flipped 180. 2004 22.

    Hydrogeneration for Batteries?

All of this is true, and.... I didn't mind paying $20 a gallon from the hardware store (or whatever) for TrueFuel for my small gas kicker on my daysailer because it saved me the time of draining carb bowls, cleaning jets, etc. (ethanol is required where I live), and lasted me more than an entire...

    Hydrogeneration for Batteries?

EDIT: turns out they’re thousands of dollars, lol. Closing that tab forever! Morning. Has anyone ever experimented with hydrogeneration aboard a C-Dory for the purposes of charging a battery bank? My “only a couple minutes” searching online said anything being driven by a propeller will lose...

Double-checking My Planned but Minimal Battery Upgrade

Great stuff, Tom. Adding to this for the forum (not for you, who knows this) is a succinct and helpful video by Will Prowse on the matter, corroborating the FAA chart and showing the potential failure points (and their minimal risk despite them, provided you’re still cautious as it’s a battery...

Double-checking My Planned but Minimal Battery Upgrade

(it's worth noting-- "danger is real; fear is not real"-- that they used a Nissan Leaf battery, not exactly a marine LifePO4 ABYC blah blah, and who knows where all their solar and regulators and temperature sensors and BMS and wiring and all the rest came from, was installed by, etc..)

Double-checking My Planned but Minimal Battery Upgrade

An example of "the lithium battery might start the fire, but your own planning choices might be what kill you". A bit alarmist/sensational to get YouTube views-- that's his "job"-- but still a lesson in here after a sailing couple died due to all of the above:

Double-checking My Planned but Minimal Battery Upgrade

(sorry for all the typos and wrong word choices in my various posts across this forum: iPhone and multiple kid distractions; or for= are for; greening = gleening, reaidence= residence, and others along the way. I actually AP tested fully out of freshman year college English back when I was in...

Double-checking My Planned but Minimal Battery Upgrade

It has to do with the instant and huge power draw of a windlass motor, and that’s what starting batteries or for. House banks of lithium, though, are less cut and dry depending on what you have for controllers and BMS type stuff, than the lead acid ones were, because they can supply big bursts...

Double-checking My Planned but Minimal Battery Upgrade

My thought about the foil was more as anti-ventilation in reverse-- like an off label use-- not their traditional purpose. But, glad you have good reverse. Can you move the Navy's further apart? Without doing the math, that might not help enough anyways. Is there a push button throttle option...

Double-checking My Planned but Minimal Battery Upgrade

Do you have the two Navy motors with separate throttles like traditional gas "twins"? Are you able to rotate in place (zero turn mower / tank)? With all the electricity on board, maybe you could add an electric bow thruster (could just be a spot lock type trolling motor clamped on the bow rail...

Double-checking My Planned but Minimal Battery Upgrade

I found one of RC's articles showing a bait-and-switch warning about the ecosystem Will Prowse operates in (note, he does encourage people to watch his videos, it's not an issue caused by Will), in that these manufacturers will send him a good battery with superior internals for review, then...
