Lithium battery house battery charging/alternator overload?

I appreciate all the recent threads concerning the addition of solar charging options. It has been a great education. Our largest power demand is the Engel 14 refer/freezer. If we are at anchor more than 24 hrs we are in need of charging with the alternator on the Honda 90, even with 3- 85ah AGM...

    Supplementing with solar

Meant to say detrimental to outboard alternator in previous post. Not starter.

    Supplementing with solar

Captain Starbuck and WCF: Jim Usery is the name of the tech who advised me against using Lithium batteries. In my case with a new Honda BF 90 that puts out 40-44 amps it would be detrimental to the outboard starter at some point and not adequately charge the lithium battery unless consistently...

    Supplementing with solar

Just an update where I landed after input from others. The objective is to go at least 48 hrs without charging with the Honda 90 outboard. I am adding one additional Vmax 85 ah AGM so will have three 85 ah AGMs in parallel for house batteries and another as the start battery, with a Yadina...

25ft cruiser headed to Valdez, Alaska

Even though I have driven the ALCAN several times and there are considerations in addition to fuel I mentioned earlier, I would still drive it just because I love the trip. 🤷‍♂️

25ft cruiser headed to Valdez, Alaska

I towed our ‘22 from Idaho to Valdez and back last spring. With the cost of fuel, particularly in Canada, the shipping price you were quoted might not be so bad. I’m sure you could trailer it one way for less cost even with high fuel prices considering fuel alone. However, lots of other...

    Supplementing with solar

We are right on the edge so maybe another 15 AH would do it. Would be happy to get two days at anchor without running the motor. I did not realize that 2-85 Ah batteries only provided a total of 85 ah. The 100 Ah Li battery you suggest is less than what I paid for the AGMs.

    Supplementing with solar

We have been on the north BC Coast the past three weeks. We are minimalists with power needs but our house batteries get down to 12.3v -12.0v daily unless we are traveling and recharging each day. We have a Victron charge controller, two 85 AH AGM house batteries and a lead acid start battery...

    8 plait to chain splice

So I am redoing my 8 plait to chain splice. Originally I did the method described in this Yale Cordage example: https://yalecordage.com/wp-content/uplo ... 1682809438 Initially the splice was picked up by the gypsy on my Lewmar 700 Profish readily. Now it will not without manual assistance...

    05/11 - 05/14 - Friday Harbor 2023

Hey Jay. We may bump into you. Our tentative plans are to launch from Port McNeil about the third week of May. Not sure how far north we will get but planning for at least Hartley Bay. If we don’t see you there we have reservations at Yellowstone in July. Prayers that Jolee’s health allows a...

    Salt Water in PortaPotti Flush

It seems the bigger question is properly discharging the contents of a porta potti, especially in remote waters where marina facilities are very limited. I’m not sure how many actually navigate out of their way the required 3 mi. offshore. Even if they dump 3 mi. offshore, the current is as...

    Composting Toilet

We bit the bullet and ordered a new composting toilet to replace our chemical portable toilet. From a recent thread, we were introduced to the Comp Closet Cuddy. https://compocloset.com/cuddy/?gclid=EA ... gJ1CvD_BwE We have only ever used a West Marine chemical toilet. It works but is...

1st use of composting toilet. Not sure I'll keep it.

Thanks Paul. This looks like a good solution for the CD 22. It checks the boxes for having a liquids tank separate from the compost tank. The height is a bit too high to fit under the bed in the Vberth however. That would not be a problem for us as we typically use and carry it in the cockpit...

    Prince Rupert launching/parking

It was actually Richards good idea to try Bridgview Marine. Please let us know what you learn about potential options in PR. Driving to and launching from PR is the best option for us from a time and cost perspective also. We have friends in Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Is that we could...

    Prince Rupert launching/parking

Jay, Yellowstone was so much fun last summer with grandsons, we have a slip and campsite reserved again this summer. Keep warm. Only single digits below zero here🙂

    Prince Rupert launching/parking

Andy, if you are able to figure out the parking in PR, it is an easy two day trailer there from WA, as it was for me from north ID. A good halfway point to overnight is the Discovery Centre parking lot in Williams Lake. http://www.williamslake.ca/466/Tourism-Discovery-Centre I did not mean...

    Prince Rupert launching/parking

We researched long term parking in PR last year. Per Wagoners we contacted Coastal Propane. Initially they told us they no longer provided the service. After exhausting other possibilities I contacted them again to see if they could recommend any other other options. They then said they could...

    Upgrading VHF

Thanks for the validation Jay. I really like the SH I have now, just wanted the addition of gps and the plug and play NMEA 2000, as everything is now networked. The old one will go to a good home in SE AK where my older plotter went.

    Upgrading VHF

Appreciate the discussion. I think I will go with the Standard Horizon GX2400. It has AIS receive, NMEA 2000 plug and play and dedicated GPS. After reading this Wagoner article, I don’t think I want AIS transmit capability.😉 https://waggonerguide.com/big-brother-and-ais/
