Agree that the Garmin In-reach is a good tool for you to consider. Even if you do not use the convenience of typing on a smartphone, just using the user devised messages may meet your needs. Ours gets a lot of use.

You make a good point. I have used the kicker a few times to get to a safer place to correct a problem. Once the thermostat stuck closed on the main causing it to overheat and few times I spun a prop. All of these can happen with a new motor.

I think I have the long shaft, but will give it a go when we get a chance to get it in the water.
