protecting boat on a long haul

What I used for taping was Dr Shrink, something Les recommended. I guess it is shrink wrap tape. It has the virtue of being easy to remove, with no residue. Great stuff. Dave

protecting boat on a long haul

Trailering cross country I taped cardboard on the boat's front windows, expecting a few thousand miles of fine grit to be hitting them. Dave

Non ethanol gas stations in US/Canada

In Port Townsend, in addition to the Pettit station, the gas pump at Boat Haven is alcohol free, so they told me. Dave

    Learning The Hard Way

Marc, please do comment. Doesn't hurt to remind us that to provide the service, you pay rent, salaries, even when the mechanic isn't doing billable work, insurance, special tools, training - what am I leaving out? There's a lot of cost just to open the door in the morning. There's a lot of...

06/25 - Port Townsend Safety Boats

Thanks, Harvey, for being there. It was a good time. The missing boat was in fact the Atlantic Rowers, who didn't have a number showing. Background for anyone who doesn't know: the four Seattle guys rowed the boat across the Atlantic in a race with three other boats, on English, one French...

Great, Harvey! We can handle it ourselves. Just kidding. We will have non-C Dory help this year. Dave

06/25 - Port Townsend Safety Boats

Hi guys My attention has been elsewhere, but it is time to pull things together for the Rat Island Regatta next weekend. Although several have said they are coming, we don't have signups yet. If you can come, go to center of home page for CBrats and find the Port Townsend link, and get your...

06/25 - Port Townsend Safety Boats

Sure. There is always a possibility for strong weather Friday PM. I hope we will have suffiicient numbers that if someone has to drop that will be okay. Also we can supplement with local non C Dorys, if need be. I had not ever before last year's Sunday race (open water), seen anything but...

06/25 - Port Townsend Safety Boats

Ouch! Yes, the 25th of June, I was told the 26th and didn't double check. >What does "safety boat service" involve? I'm guessing it's keeping other boats off the race course, keeping the contestants on the course, and watching out for evolving safety "issues. That is a pretty good summary...

06/25 - Port Townsend Safety Boats

Reconsidering what I wrote, I should note that among us talented amateurs, we had someone like Dave S, who as fireman, is a professional safety guy. We welcomed that sort of input. This year the task hopefully will be easier than the open water race. Dave M

06/25 - Port Townsend Safety Boats

Okay, some of the veteran safety guys are uncertain or unavailable. New folks - this is a job we can quickly train you for. If you can run your boat, you can become one of us safety guys! If we have enough - six, maybe - we can own the safety boat function, in other words it will be all C...

06/25 - Port Townsend Safety Boats

Steve Chapin, organizer of the rowing race we did safety boat work for last year, asked if we would like to do safety boat service for the annual Rat Island Race of the rowing club. That was the one we did on on Saturday last year, the one we cut our teeth on. Is there interest in doing this...

    Introducing the Liveaboard Sleep Center!!!

Come to think of it, actually I am beached at the moment. I sold the only vehicle, my truck, that can pull the boat. Until I get another, or kidnap a friend with a tow vehicle, i'm high and dry, or dry anyway. So LSC sounds pretty good to me. Dave

    Introducing the Liveaboard Sleep Center!!!

Wow, I turn my back and you guys go off in odd directions. But I like it. Does it mean I can continue enjoying the parts of boating I love, and sell the boat so I don't have the things I less like, such as buying gas? Dave

    What's with the Honda tach?

My Honda tachometer has gone erratic. Sometimes it might read 5 or 6,000 when the engine is doing 4,000rpm. I find that if I tap the meter it might settle down (or it might go up to 7,000), so I tend to think it is in the meter itself. Is this something others have seen? Hate to think it...

    E outboard

    >But, won't it be cool when we it becomes practical to toodle around at >displacement with only the sound of the water on the hull? There are some guys around our area who have done that by hanging sheets on sticks, and the sheets catch the wind to propel the boat!
