136-foot tug grouded on Bligh Reef PWS AK

RedFox used to say: "If you ain't been aground, you ain't been around". I wonder whatever happened to him.

    Four Wheel Drive ?

My technique exactly - in low range everything is calm and smooth and easy, but in high range you get racing motors and spinning wheels and waaaaay too much excitement. Great entertainment when you are watching somebody else do it, but kind of white-knuckly when it is YOUR truck and YOUR boat.

136-foot tug grouded on Bligh Reef PWS AK

Maybe check the survey datum your GPS is set on? Many of the early surveys and early charts were done in "NAD27". Most GPS units are set on "WGS84" or "NAD83" - which is often off by 100 or 200 feet from the older charts. Most GPS units will let you change the datum to correct for this. And...

Need advice on best kicker for new 16 Angler

I have a Yamaha 6 for a kicker on my 17 foot Arima, and highly recommend it. Twin cylinder, and very quiet - pushes the boat about 5 knots, and starts first time, every time. Weighs 82 pounds, though - maybe to heavy for your CD16.

    Water Intake on TC24

I don't have one. A hole in the hull below the water line? Spooky. I have a hose with a heavy screen on the end that I throw overboard when I want to wash anything down. Seems we are always in the cabin when underway, so it works for us.

    TC-24

We are a bit north of you, so that huge solar collector has never been a problem for us. Ugly on a stick - yes, but a problem - not at all. The TC255 is a much larger boat than the TC24. Look up the TC24 "Molly Brown". I recall that one in Florida, and they had come up with a pretty...

    Honda 90 Engine Controls

We have a 98 Honda 90 on our Arima, and 2004 Honda 90s on our TomCat. The 98 only has a manual choke on the front of the motor. The lever on the 98 is a throttle for use when the engine is in neutral. The 04s have a manual choke on the front of the motor, and pressing the key also is a choke...

    Tom Cat Power

The TomCat literature we saw when we bought ours stated that the boat was designed for Honda 90s - and we are powered with these. These Hondas weigh somewhere around 360 lbs each. Our boat with a medium load will top out at 28 knots. Most of the time, this is faster than conditions will allow...

    Tom Cat Scuppers & Macerator

See my photos. Not particularly pretty, but very effective.

    Wandering Taco Meter

Got it - Whack it. Check the wiring, Then ignore it. Simple, cheap, and keeps me fishing. Thanks.

    Wandering Taco Meter

My Tomcat has twin Honda 90s, with a bit over 500 hours each. First trip out this year, the port Tachometer started acting up - sometimes reading higher than the starboard meter, even though the engines were running the same speed - as far as I could tell by sound and vibration and throttle...

    TOWING 6000 POUNDS

Something to consider: My neighbor towed his Bayliner around all last year with his standard Chevy pickup. Very close or just over the rated weight for the truck. This year he replaced the transmission.

adding a porthole in the head on a tomcat

On the TC24, there is enough space between the wall of the head and the exterior to hold paperback books or other light reading material (or other bathroom supplies). I have been thinking about cutting out a space in this wall and framing it for storage.

    Let's talk compasses

I see many good suggestions here, but I would add this word of warning. . . . Do not get a Tate's compass. Because he who has a Tate's is lost.

    Ugliest boat afloat ?

    Yeah!!! 24 Tomcat!!! Wait a minute . . . . . I think I represent that remark.

    Mixing kerosene and Kleen Heat

Me too. Nice clean diesel, kerosene, and Kleen-Strip. No fuel problems after 3 boating seasons.

Choosing Between Various Heaters and Stoves

I installed a Webasto Airtop 2000 last spring. Now we use the Wallas for cooking and the Webasto for cabin heat. Both are fueled from the same tank. The Webasto fan is less noisy than the Wallas, and the Webasto has a thermostat. Also, I was able to install a couple of vents to defrost the...

    Water seperator/filter question

Last spring I was putting the fuel filters back on the boat, and couldn't get fuel to flow. Turns out there was a check valve at the top of the fuel tank that was stuck shut. When I finally figured out where the problem was, I unscrewed the check valve, washed it in WD40, and got a little crud...

    A very SH***Y aspect of owning a C-D 25

Me too. Remember that we are talking about boats. Boat Rule Number 1 is that everything eventually breaks. The question to keep in mind is - how bad will it be WHEN it breaks. Wait - that is Boat Rule Number 2. Boat Rule Number 1 is - everything that needs fixing will cost more than you...

    TomCat Engine Question

We have Honda 90s on our 24' TC. My opinion - Honda is the most reliable engine available. Performance and other specs are pretty close for all the outboard manufacturers - differences of only a few percent. IF you go waay out, as we do sometimes, the reliability factor becomes more...
