How about just using a temporary clamp (alligator clip whatever) to attach it to an easy to get to/best you can find ground and see how the system performs? You may be battling ghosts.

The sounder unit for my E80 seems to only want to give a reading when at a dead stop. Looking at the LED code blinks it is shows a "Watchdog Timeout Reboot" code. A Google search did not really come up with answers, only more questions, anybody seen this before?

This is true, not a lot of boats out here even on this beautiful sunny weekend.

Princess Cove is different than Pirates Cove which is on De Courcy Island. I have done a stern by myself but it was in a place where I didn't have to worry about drift while setting the stern tie. Another option if you have a secondary anchor is dropping it off the stern while you go ashore.

Sunbeam, I just checked Wild Blue after getting here to Nanaimo and it looks like the zippers do contact the gelcoat but I see no ill effect. Perhaps Jim can chime in as to whether he made a point of not zipping all the way, but I have been.

Because of limited Internet up here, I am going to just blog our whereabouts and post the link here. I will monitor the forum to answer any questions if they come up.
