    A knotty subject

Great site! I have added to my nautical favorites list. I worked at a the Snead Island Boatworks in Florida many years ago. While the entire Boatworks crew of seasoned men held a very large and heavy wooden mast, I struggled to untie a knot I had made to it. There was a lot of grunting and...

Nice job Greg. You definitely have some classic and unique projects to show... thanks for sharing them.

    Wireless Autopilot Controller

Yes, providing you already have them. The ST5000 I have does not. But if you have the fishing capabilities with your current autopilot, i.e., zig zag, circle, cloverleaf, etc., the remote runs them through a mode button. You just toggle through the list and select one. I noted in the manual...

    Wireless Autopilot Controller

Well I got it, installed it, and love it! I found the S100 Wireless Remote on the web for $359 and it works like a charm. Installation was simple. Two screws for the base and simply plugged it in to the back of my existing ST5000 control box. It doesn't get any easier that this.

    ALONE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA?

I've done it a few times... one beautiful trip! And you can wash down your boat with fresh water along the way.

Too funny Ken... took me a while to quit laughing!

    Wireless Autopilot Controller

I have a Raymarine ST5000 Autopilot on the Clara Mae which I use constantly. Recently Raymarine has come out with the S100 Wireless Remote which I am eyeing as a Birthday/Christmas/Anniversary present (mine). It isn't a cockpit helm but would make a reasonable second for the kind of boating I...

    How strong are they?

I have trailered the Clara Mae thousands of miles, but always with the motor down or slightly tilted. I have plenty of ground clearance and my logic has always been to keep the motor's center of gravity and height as close to the transom as possible. Right or wrong, I have had no problems.

    ALONE IN CENTRAL FLORIDA?

Sounds like a Florida Gathering may be on the horizon. The Clara Mae is about ready for another trip to the Sunshine State.

    Smoking on a C-Dory

My wife smokes in the cockpit (when she is not trying to quit) and our only rules are: 1) Not next to the fuel vent and 2) Put you butts and ashes in a beer can. Since we drink different brands, there is no chance of me mistaking her ash tray for my beer. :disgust

    Overweight?

In the strictest interpretation of the law, the capacity plate rules. Having said that, it really boils down to two things for me, both of which are related. First, are you so grossly overloaded that by mere sight, it gets the attention of the coast guard or other authority? Second, is there...

    Overweight?

Hi Dave. What does your capacity plate say? It should be located near the helm or on the transom.

    Single vs Twin

I have had the Clara Mae for three years now with a single Honda 130 four stroke on her and no kicker. Although I think having twins would be great, I would stick with the same set up if I had it to do all over again. For one, I really like my swim platform and use it all the time. I am not...

    Dock Safety

We have had a few mishaps over the years but fortunately none serious. Unless I am on a long trip, most of my boating is usually inland with shorelines (or sawgrass and pluff mud) close by. Nonetheless when alone, there are several situations in which I wear a PFD. If I leave the cockpit to...

Well Tom, I'm not sure why your "add photos" link is not there. This looks like a job for Bill.

    Raymarine C-80 - compass needed?

I know what you mean. I have a Garmin chart plotter and a Raymarine autopilot with an electronic compass. Since the two talk to each other, you would think there would be an option on the Garmin to use the heading info from the Raymarine compass instead of the GPS. Unless the boat is moving...
