New C-Dory Enthusiast with lots of questions

You've come across a heck of a versatile boat. I'll add my responses below: 1.) I think you'll find the closed pilot house a significant advantage. You will never again want to own a partial or canvas covered boat. The solid cabin is so much more comfortable in terms of noise reduction...

Windlass causing unusal drop in voltage

Napoleon is back in the water and looking great! During my shakedown cruise for this season I noticed when I engaged the windlass, with engines running, it would drop my voltage to the point where it would reset my GPS/Radar system (this has never happened before). Using a multimeter I...

    Super Full Moon tonight...

No can do up here unfortunately...fog and clouds. I was working in the harbor last night and the high tide level was impressive!

    My new Tomcat so far.

This reminds me of my purchase experience with a bad dealer. The factory at the time of sale did a good job. The following year the assets were sold again and my 10 warranty became worthless. Thankfully I ended up with a boat that I believe was well built. I sure hope the same applies to...

    Anchor, Chain, Rode

Ouch - do you know know divers? If yes - cut line and hang a fender in it so you can retrieve it. I hope the rest of the trip was uneventful.

    Furuno Radar

Radar really is a beautiful thing. My longest leg in pea soup zero vis outside of the cabin fog was roughly 30nm from Boston to the north entrance of the Cape Cod Canal. I was cruising several miles offshore following a course I had programming in my GPS. In these conditions you are...

    Furuno Radar

It depends on my speed and target proximity. If coastal cruising at 22knots I set mine to 1.5 or .750nm. If in the inner harbor at headway speed I set it to .5 or .25. The closer the range the larger the targets and the better the target separation will appear on your display.

    Water problem

I never recommend using dead ballast in a boat. Instead shift usable gear around to balance as required. Batteries, anchor chain, etc.

    motor maintenance

I never use factory oils or filters - it's a waste of money for the same rated oils/filters from other brands. For oil I use Rotella, for lower unit I use whatever 90w hypoid gear oil is available whether it's West Marine or other brands. Also - there was a period there where Suzuki had an...

    batteryquestion

I'm about to start season 4 with my original batteries. I have three deep cycle bats. During the winter I baby them - no colder than 60 degrees in the basement, elevated off the floor, ensure fluid levels are good, and put them away fully charged. I charge them again at the start of the...

    Table with map embedded?

I did that with Napoleon. I had a piece of actual glass (not plexi) cut to spec and placed an antique laminated map of France under it. The fiddles around the table are sturdy and holds it in place well (survived even pounding seas).

    Connecticut c-dory boat sales

I suggest looking for the best boat regardless of location. I purchased mine from Long Island Yacht Sales and would not purchase there again. Y Landing in NH was helpful in my limited (1 time) visit with them. The shipping cost, say from Marc or others in Florida for a new boat is not that...

    How do they know???

The site does get paid for allowing content network ads to appear. The term for ads and ad types that follow you is oddly enough "re-targeting". The buyer can also limit the number of times the ad will appear per IP address. I hope the site is able to pull in a little extra money. --Matt

    Newbie here with questions!

The Tomcat would present you with the space and clearance you are looking for. High ceiling, large forward bed, tons of storage, and a nice offshore cruising vessel. There is no vessel where you would not need to be mindful and aware of the marine forecast (well...I don't think aircraft...

Tomcat 255 vs Skagit Orca 27XLC

The low tunnel is a design flaw with the Tomcat. At rest in chop it is very stable but it will slap. (If spending the night you need to find a calm spot). The other cat's you reference are displacement or semi-displacement cats with higher tunnel clearances. I believe they would offer...

    painting the bottom

If the hull is bare, I would opt for the extra insurance of epoxy barrier coat prior to ablative bottom paint. I've never seen a paint that will last 1 season let alone more...that is until this past season when I applied Pettit Ultima Eco ablative. After 11 years and many different paints I...

    Scamp - sailing pram

Denny - I've built 3 wooden pram's. Each also included plans for a sailing rig. If you don't mind the stitch and glue method Bateau.com is a great resource. I have one pictured in my album (not my most recent project folder).

Do I have to be a Good Samaritan, Won't I get sued?

Ditto....if you can safely help how could you not? It is amazing how many people do not help when something happens right in front of them. I responded to one MayDay call last year (picture of vessel taking on water in my album). I was among about 20 boats that responded fortunately. We...
