Southeast Alaska Marine Highway - Towns to visit

If you can take a side trip from Ketchikan to Hollis on a local ferry you can then spend a week or so traveling the roads on Prince of Wales Island. There are about 750 miles of forest roads that get you to Craig, Klawock, Thorne Bay, Kaasan, and all the way up to the caves at El Capitan. Tom

Predictive Wave Height Matrix Alternative To NOAA Forecasts

I have done the same thing in my head for the areas we frequent as I always thought the one NOAA buoy in that area was on a short chain. A significant wave height of 2 feet really meant 3-4 feet on average. Winds and their direction meant more than anything else. Some of the guide books...

Outboard Engine Mounting Bolts - How Tight?

I didn't see it mentioned, but I have always used NYLOCK nuts on the bolts. That keeps them from vibrating loose lock washers not withstanding. If you don't use NYLOCKS, I would double nut the bolts for the same reason. As far as motor height is concerned, I haven't seen any C-Dory yet where...

Best sonar for viewing the bottom in a silty river?

Kushtaka, I share your frustration with charts and software. I can't the number of times, I have boated through islands and driven my truck down the Turnagain Arm. There's not much difference between the Copper River and chocolate milk made with 3 or 4 times as much powdered mix as necessary...

ETEC 90 Engine Identification Report Interpretation

Charlie My engine report showed the average operating temp was 87F. I thought that was a little low although BRP said that was within normal parameters. I thought not and 2 weeks later changed the engine for a Honda. The ETEC uses two ways to control engine temp. One is the thermostat which...

    Question regards to C-dory's engine

Eric I was one of the people trying to squeeze as much mileage out of a gallon of gas as I could. The reason wasn't money but distance, we planned trips that consistently required some fuel planning and predictable consumption. We had several trips we did each year where we covered more than...

    Battery charging while under way

I vote for the ACR setup. The only thing I do recommend with the ACR is put it in a place where you can see the LED. That let's you know it is working at a glance unless you have a voltage readout on your chart plotter or other engine instrument. On my current boat with a Blue Sea ACR, I...

New Affordable Boat Act (A Joke)

What bothers me is that I have to pay for a dinghy even though I can't have one and my wife is too old to have one. If I really wanted a dinghy I could adopt one or wait for the son/step daughter to get one and let us use it.

    Pat's Countdown!

Pat I practiced last summer and am back to work again, in Hawaii. I am going to practice again next summer and if I am good at it keep going. Congrats and good luck. Come back to Alaska and meet us near Wrangell. Tom

    GPS and VHF in conflict

Casey, The difference in operating frequency between the VHF and GPS is so great there has to be something else happening. Check the connectors on the GPS antenna and VHF to be sure they are tight and inspect the transmission lines from the antennas to the radio/chartplotter to be sure the...

Prop/WOT/engine height - would appreciate your thoughts.

On both C-Dory's I have owned, the engines were mounted too low by the dealer by 1 1/2 to 2 inches. In both cases, I wish I had more upward adjustment but ran out of transom. I used Permatrims on both. On the 22 the Permatrim didn't seem to make a whole lot of difference other than cutting...

    Best boat retrieval ever

The 28 Kingfisher I recently sold has seen 8 years of service launching on the beach at Ninilchik. It is rough on the boat and really hard on the trailer. The boat is on it's second trailer and is due for a third soon. Lower units also take a beating if the guy on the log skidder doesn't do...

    Neverwet Coating finally hits production

I don't think this will have much affect on condensation as it will only make it run off faster. To stop condensation you have to break up the transition from the cool surface and the warm moist air inside the cabin. That requires something with insulation value. Tom

best outboard to buy to replace a honda 135????

I have direct experience with Yamaha (150), Honda (90 and 150), and ETEC (90, 150, 200). I would not buy an ETEC for any boat that is run more than occasionally. In 5 years of running ETECs in charter, I cannot count the number of injectors, plugs, and power heads (2 at least) we have...

    SE Alaska 2013

Casey, Look for us in Ketchikan next Wed/Thur (Jun 12). Our boat is at the City Dock now and will be for the next 10 days or so while we head to Anchorage for a couple of days. Tom

2005 25 Cruiser, $65,000 or Trade (Anchorage, AK)

Bidarka II has been sold and will still reside in Prince William Sound. Hope the new owners enjoy her as much as we did and we are still looking for a 22 probably in the fall. Tom

    MMSI NUMBER

I know on Standard Horizon, you have to take it to an authorized repair facility or send it back to change it. I am sending one back today as I moved it from one boat to another. Tom

    Fun Yak Dinghies

I've had one of these (http://www.cabelas.com/product/Boating/ ... 712055.uts) for about 8 years and paid much less for it. It was the best compromise between weight and carrying two people. I've only used the rowing frame once. I normally just use two boards across the tubes and paddle it...
