    Secrets of Raymarine

Jay, It's not hard to pop the top off the radome to do a visual inspection. Be sure everything is powered down.On the radars I have inspected and repaired, it has come down to a loose connector. The antenna array in most smaller radars is light weight and can be rotated with a finger. I know...

    anchoring advice

Jay, I switched to Delta anchors about 6 years ago after a couple of experiences with claw anchors in grass. I haven't been disappointed so far including anchoring in the Cook Inlet in 200 feet of water with a 4 knot tide.

    CD25 prop size

Bob, My porpoising is more a loading issue than anything else. For some reason when the water tank forward is full or near that, I will porpoise above 32. I had the boat up to 35 mph in water with a little ripple on top this spring with no water on board and it was a smooth ride at 5600 rpm...

    CD25 prop size

Tom A couple of other things to consider. How high is your motor mounted? I have yet to have a motor mounted properly by a dealer. They generally all mount them too low. Having owned two C-Dory's and helping adjust a third, you need to look at the motor when the ventilation plate is...

    Pulling anchor w/ bouy

Chris, I have a windlass, but when anchoring over 100 feet or so such as while fishing, I will pull the anchor with a buoy. It's much easier on all the parts especially the windlass as it is only pulling the rope in and then the chain. The anchor is on the surface. I use a steel ring that...

Best Outboard Brand for Owner Maintenance?

Not being a dealer but having to support multiple boats and engines a long way from a dealer, here are my criteria: The best motor is: a. The most reliable (they all pretty much qualify) b. Has the best technical manual c. Requires the fewest number of special tools to do simple things...

    Blinded By the Light

Heard on weather radio in Prince William Sound: "Local observations at 1 PM on June 2. At Whittier it was sunny, reducing the visibility to near zero..." I have the audio file but don't have permission to post it.

What is your tow vehicle / what's a good price for a trailer

I want to keep this alive with one more comment. It looks to me that the 1/2 ton Chevrolet (1500) with the right packages would have a Gross Combined Weight Rating of 15,000 lbs. With an Gross Weight of 7000 lbs (giving you about 2200 lbs for people, gear, fuel) you could tow 8000 lbs. This...

Standard H. VHF RADIO W AIS

I bought a 2150 this winter and it works well with the dual NMEA output. Most chart plotters can take data at 38400 so the 2100 might be a good deal for someone. With my antenna up at home I have picked up AIS targets at nearly 50 miles, but I am at 700 feet so that was a big help.

    Gas Prices

Our prices in Anchorage are now $4.35 for reg and $4.55 for diesel. At least the gas is gas. Like Bellingham, we are bucking the trend with increasing prices and declining oil prices. Nationwide prices are down $.18 over the last month and we are up $.13 on unleaded. I might have to start...

    any genealogy wizzes

I wish I could help. My wife tried to outline my family in Ancestry.com and hit a wall when she couldn't find me. I guess I must be a figment of her imagination. Do a search on me in Google and the first 1,000,000 or so are about somebody who lives in Boston.

    Ordering New Stainless Prop

Les, I have had a couple of PowerTech props and they always seemed to be about an inch or two steeper in pitch than their number indicated in a side by side comparison of a Solas propeller of the same pitch. The motor couldn't turn them as fast so to get comparable performance I had to drop...

    Ordering New Stainless Prop

I have always liked Solas aluminum and stainless props and today run a 4 blade stainless 15 pitch with an aluminum backup on my Yamaha 150. After experimenting with 4 different props that was the one that worked the best for all round performance. Boris, are you sure it is 16 pitch? Those...

    C_Dory aground

I think if you look at the stern the answer to recovery is there. They have already attached a couple of buoys. Rig some more buoys across the stern to provide floatation as there will be some tides that will pick the stern up before the bow will float. I think when the stern starts floating...

C-Dory for Dummies - Manual for Marine Head

    A. Remove it. B. Buy a Porta Potti I have found the marine head more trouble than its worth. We don't have any pumpout facilities anywhere close, and my impression of macerators and pumps is they are problems waiting to happen. I had the rebuild the pump in mine once already. The porta...

    improving radio reception

The most likely cause of the problem is a connector. I just swapped a Shakespear 8 ft 6 dB antenna with some cable issues for a Digital 8 foot 6 db antenna connected to my Standard Horizon Matrix 2150. I am running that on the radar arch where I also have a 4 foot GAM stainless steel whip...

    Porta Potti conversion

David, I did that with the Thetford 365 two years ago. It sits higher and is a better fit in the head. Much simpler to deal with. Don't let it get full, it gets heavy to move.
