What to do with the roof

I had a 1500 in college. 6V system with bad battery and alternator. Had to push it to start. Yours is in much better condition.

Smart Phone vs Tablet Whats your choice?

Harvey, I am running the Navionics App on a Motorola Xoom so the answer is correct, it would seem to run on both but it may be different versions since the typical Android OS for a phone is not the same as the Xoom at this point.

Smart Phone vs Tablet Whats your choice?

My cut is that you need both. A tablet doesn't do things a phone does and a phone doesn't do things a tablet does. The real question is can a tablet replace a notebook. My answer to that is not yet but it is real close. My big complaint about IPhones/IPads and Android phones/tablets is that...

RFID Chip in your Credit Card

My credit union debit card charges no transaction fees, limits liability if stolen to $50, and has no annual fee. I don't see any disadvantage since on purchases at alot stores, you can get additional cash avoiding ATM fees when I am out of state, and there is no RFID chip in it. It worked...

    ShiRoz Sold

Rich, The prior owner's fishing prowess was grossly overstated. May you bring better luck to the boat.

    Fuel flow gauge

I like the Lowrance LMF 200 or 400 with the fuel flow transducer. It has the advantage of doing other things with NMEA 2000 if that ever comes up, like in a new engine, electronics, and the like.

The Coast Guard would NOT love this guy....

Just how does a sailboat sink? I'm still looking for sails. After looking at the pictures in the slip, backing into the fairway must be fun.

    Permatrim slowing me down?

Jay, On my 22, the Permatrim was kind of optional. The main difference was how efficiently it would cruise at 12-14 mph. With the Permatrim, the boat/motor woud do very well at 12-14 mph. With it off it moved that speed up the 14-16 mph. For me it was a matter of engine loading. Will it...

    Value of an Autopilot

After reading comments on the thread about hydraulic steering, I started wondering what value people are getting out of their autopilots. I've had one on Bidardka II for 2 years and can honestly say I wish I had put one on the first Bidarka on day one. The value I get out of it ranges from...

    Fishing in Sitka-Summer 2012

Peter Most charter operators can handle singles since they will combine you with other parties. They generally have a minimum number to run a trip. If you are flexible as to days, they can probably fit you in solo. If they can't, there are multiple charter operators in Sitka, just check and...

Xfer Waypoints & Routes from Coastal Explorer to C-80

Pat, I have relegated the C-80 to sonar duties as the primary, radar next, and backup chart plotter last. CE is running on a Dell tablet on a RAM mount at the helm with its 12V power supply hard wired to a switch. The same switch also controls the C-80 sonar module since it is separately...

    Which brand?

I have owned and worked on: ETEC 90 Honda 90 EFI Honda BF150 (2) Yamaha F150 Of the four I put Yamaha on top for design, engineering, quality, ease of maintenance. I have 802 hours on the Yamaha 150 and inside it looks new. The Honda 150s have 900 hours on them and look like it. Water is able...

RF has never let winter get in the way of boating. Where's the old picture of his boat "beached" on pancake ice in Prince William Sound?

90HP Honda VS 115 HP Suzuki

Bob again hit the nail on the head with the 9.9 Merc. We had one on a 12 foot Alumacraft that we could water ski behind (me at a 90 lbs and the skier at 90 lbs). It was that way in Tennessee at the time to avoid registering the boat since it was under 10 hp. Motor manufacturers issue...

3 way switch off, motor running

Vern, Let's take one more try. You can go to Wally World or Radio Shack and get a simple volt meter for about $10 to $12, analog or digital, either will work. You will be looking for the VDC, DC, or - marked on the meter for the setting and if it has various ranges like 20V or 200V pick the...

3 way switch off, motor running

Vern, My understanding is the charging voltage from the alternator to the batteries coming out of the voltage regulator should be reflected throughout the 12 VDC distribution on the boat with the switch on. It should read slightly differently at different points in the distribution (helm for...

3 way switch off, motor running

Bob as usual is spot on. Voltmeters are an essential piece of test equipment for anything electrical. I lost count of how many volt meters I have. At least two are on the boat. One is wired to the electrical panel to measure the voltage there. I use it to monitor battery voltage to the house...

    Moving a GPS antenna

Some GPS pucks are susceptible to interference from marine radar, particularly older Lowrance units. I had one that wouldn't work on the radar arch no matter how high I mounted it. It also would go offline any time I got near the Alaska ferries. I moved to the electronics shelf inside and it...
