    Kayak advice needed...

Colby, with Thule racks and J saddles (kayaks on edge), do you think you might be able to fit kayaks on either side of your radar?

    Get home motor use

Not on my C-Dory, but when the Mercruiser I/O failed on my Glassply 19, many years ago, I used my kicker to get back to Juneau from the Taku Glacier. Good old reliable Evinrude 15 two-stroke.

Has anyone replaced the window felt? I haven't been able to find a thread here on how to do that.

Congratulations Mark. That's really cool! I hope your patrols will be in a relatively safe part of King County. (If there is such a thing.)

    Ferry vs. Breakwater (cape cod)

From Washington Post: When Navy ships collide, there is virtually always human error involved https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/checkpoint/wp/2017/06/19/when-navy-ships-collide-there-is-virtually-always-human-error-involved/?utm_term=.896e724ad0bc "One former naval surface warfare officer...

Dual outboard engine training for a former sailboater

I was up at Point Hudson last weekend and I believe I saw your boat, wedged in between the inner dock and the rocky shoreline. I was hoping I might run into you (not literally), so I could ask how you got the boat into that skinny space. I have a 22 with twin Hondas, but I was strictly a...

I'm fuming so I'd better vent or I'll explode

I think you have to shop for knowledgeable salespersons the same way you shop for products—and using your BS detector is an important part of that process. Do I trust this person to give me advice that, if they're wrong, could potentially result in the loss of life or property? Will this person...

Open Net Fish Farming in The Strait of Juan de Fuca 2017

On further reading, both Seattle Times articles cited in this thread were written in 2013. I don't know how much things have progressed, or regressed, since then. Probably still not too late to add reader comments to the articles, though.

Open Net Fish Farming in The Strait of Juan de Fuca 2017

Lord, here's one Ms. Haspel wrote for The Seattle Times in 2013: In taste test, farmed salmon beat wild salmon, hands down Question is, who ran the taste test, and what were they smoking?

Open Net Fish Farming in The Strait of Juan de Fuca 2017

Like Bob, I don't profess to know the truth. But that doesn't mean the truth is unknowable. When I read Tamar Haspel's Seattle Times article I was struck by its one-sidedness. There is no one quoted in the article from the anti-fish farming side of the argument—such as Alexandra Morton, for...

    Advice on a first boat

Spend some time looking at boats on Craigslist. If your boating skills need work, you might consider looking at the lower end of the price range. Open skiffs, like Lund or Starcraft, cost a lot less to purchase and operate than C-Dories. Plus, they're easier to handle. A 14- or 16-foot skiff...

Survival 70 Days in SE AK

Having made the decision to go tent camping on an island with an estimated 1,600 big brown bears, it sounds like Bruce Nelson did just about everything else right. He followed Forest Service rules and moved his camp frequently. He cooked away from his tent, which was protected with an electric...
