    Advice on new TomCat purchase

Congrads Kurt and Bev on your new TC255..you’re going to love it! Stay mellow and realize that it may take several years of cruising on your new ride to discover what you like to do… and don’t. that’s normal. We are at 6 years ownership in Feb, and on the boat tonight (and the last 3 weeks)...

Pic of the Day - Let's see 'em!

If this doesn't work, it's the last pic on page 10 of the Cat O' Mine album... V oh, well... John

    03/05 - 03/07 - Hontoon Island, Florida CBGT

Harvey, On the West Dock photo, you can see radar domes on Thataway, Grace Full, and only half the dome on Midnight Flyer (because Colby had it in ‘radar Cloak mode’). I believe Tully B’s was cropped out and maybe the first boat on the left, plus Bill Smith’s boat isn’t in view and I think he...

Info on the 99 mile long Wilderness Waterway and 'chickee' camping platforms is here: https://www.nps.gov/ever/upload/Wildern ... r_2009.pdf Mainly an under 18 ft vessel adventure (plan on pulling your canoe through The Nightmare at lower tides or avoid it). The larger rivers are deep enough...

Greetings from the edge of the Everglades! Sunny and 87 degrees here today ( and most of the last 5 days), so we are not anchoring out in the 10,000 islands and Everglades as planned. Calusa Island Marina is very nice with air conditioned restrooms, showers and laundry, ramp that can float a...

    Erie/Champlain canals/Lake Champlain Adventure

Hi Red Knot! and Robert W. PM sent (Private Message button). We enjoy buddy cruising, but the Erie Canal adventure will be during hurricane season as we have a family reunion mid Aug. Us renters don't worry much about hurricanes. Cheers! John

    03/05 - 03/07 - Hontoon Island, Florida CBGT

Greetings from the St John River Hontoon Gathering, Tom says 23 boats here! Cold front ends today (but kept the bugs down), back to 83 degrees Sat. Lots of wildlife, birding and Old Florida charm. Easy boating (esp with twin weed-whackers). Every evening hundreds of majestic bald eagles soar...

    Garmin AIS 800

Nothing 'new' about that model. I've had no problems or issues in the past 6 years with mine. Garmin has a flat rate out of Warranty repair program that can be a good deal. I got a factory new $200 gps antenna for $69 to replace a failed 2010 unit(but only 90 day warranty). Good luck! John

Anyone ever cruise the Mississippi coast/barrier islands?

BillE, We lived on and cruised the Mississippi coast and barrier islands in 5 trailer boats for 22 years before retiring and moving to Pensacola in 2017. The Mississippi Sound is muddy and brown from the 5 rivers that empty into it (and occ the Mississippi river via a spillway). The 27 miles...

Importance of 4x4 or AWD or Locking Diff at boat launch?

I'm now convinced that we should spend 80 Boat Units on a 2019 Ford F250 deisel 4x4 in order to get up the ramps in the Pacicific NW that we hope to be exploring next year in summer 2020. Bob says 'you can't take it with you' and 'the kids will splurge it' and I want his next 50 reasons also! A...

Boattest.com article: How to Choose the Right Tow Vehicle

David, I agree that you have made some very good points re that magazine article. I agree with most of the points in that article, and I agree with yours as well. We tow a TC255 with a CAT weigh scale ticket typically 11,650# (1/4 full gas tanks) with a 2005 GMC HD 2500 Duramax diesel rated...

Importance of 4x4 or AWD or Locking Diff at boat launch?

Hi Bill and Sherry! As always, you are getting a lot of very thoughtful and sensible advice on this forum from folks who have ‘been there, done that’ on the subject of trailering/launching your CD25. Although I don’t disagree with a single poster, overall I fear our tone here might implant a...

Pre Hontoon Gathering short trip to DeLeon Springs

Hi Bob! We'll sign up. We snagged a suite at JAX NAS Friday night Mar 1. We can cancel up to 6pm that night if making great time, but it would be a very long single day and unlikely. It's under 2 hours towing to launch at Ed Stone on Sat Mar 2. Looks like there are multiple ways to...

Thanks, Bob! Very helpful; downloaded Chart 1 (never would have guessed it wasn't unique to Navionics and have never seen the bird symbol on my Maptech paper chart kits or "Garmin chips). BillE, You're spoiled and won't like the BBQ. John

Best of luck and health to C.A.! We enjoy having a ‘hip pocket’ (or folder) of possible mini-cruises that can be stitched together or trailered to separately with pre-planned research on marinas, distances, and routes. One of them is the Everglades (namely pieces of the 100 mile Everglades...

    The Ultimate C-Dory Cruising Challenge

Bob and Jim, Very pertinent (and ultimately similar) points and concerns. You solidify why we would not be interested in this particular kind of adventure. In addition, any adventure where a fall overboard for a cruising couple has about a 50% chance of death due to hypothermia is not the...

    BoatUS Magazine Feb-Mar 2019 Cover

My copy has Harvey's photo on the cover! Bob, if it's 'definitely regional' should we be wondering just how many regions Pensacola has been carved up into? Will I get in trouble again for ending a sentance with a preposition? I think it's much more likely that they are trying to mess with...

Only because our esteemed hosts, Tom and Joyce, have mentioned a post-Hontoon slow (and I do mean SLOW) cruise to Jacksonville, we’ll share a Bucket List possible destination with our Brat friends: Cumberland Island is a national treasure a bit north of Jacksonville (great marina and ramp at...

    Erie/Champlain canals/Lake Champlain Adventure

Boris, I did indeed mis-read the reason for your pause on your Erie Canal trip (and a very most helpful blog for us): http://www.dobro-travel.com/9_great_loop_eire.html thanks for clearing that up, and my apologies for not understanding that your spouse was waiting for a grandchild's birth...

    another Marinco shore power failure.

All excellent points! I certainly did not mean to imply that the Smartplug is fool proof or does not need routine maintance or always prevents mishaps or over heating. Conrad, hope you find a best solution for you and let us know what you decide. It's a boat, so the solution is never easy or...
