Western Erie Canal - round trip?

Bruce: Jack is right re Spencerport, a delightful village (near our home in West Chili). We once docked there during the Spencerport Canal Days: even then, not overcrowded. Jack: Where do you keep your boat "in the Canal" in the Rochester area? We keep ours at our cottage in Barker, and...

Western Erie Canal - round trip?

We have never docked at Corn Hill. We are familiar with this area of Rochester. It does get busy there. Extremely so, during the Corn Hill Festival.

Western Erie Canal - round trip?

OK, I will respond to both Bill and Richard here. Bill: My bow line is 30' in length. (So, when I retrieve the C-Dory onto the trailer, I can walk all the way to my PU, step into the bed, and pull the boat straight onto the trailer from a safe standing place!) Back to a Canal lock...I hand...

Western Erie Canal - round trip?

Les: Are yours full-size bikes? How do you carry them on board? As I said above, we have used folding bikes, strapped to the rails upfront above the berth (see photo in album). But my wife does not like the small (20") wheels!

Bruce: Wild Blue is correct re the gloves and pole. Yes, I wrap my line behind the lock line from the helm window. Wayne

Western Erie Canal - round trip?

We live in Rochester, and have a cottage in Barker (both close to the canal, and Barker is not far from Tonawanda). We regularly cruise parts of your planned route. Intuition has some good suggestions: plan to stop (and overnight) at different villages each way. We have folding bikes (see...

    Stuck sliding window

I have found that spraying water up through the drip "holes" in the channel blows out a surprising amount of dirt from the channel. I have also found that banging on the window (carefully) and "bouncing it a bit helps. You might also try using a tool (a long-handled screwdriver may work)...

    Lake Ontario

We have cottage on L. Ontario, and I launch regularly at Golden Hill SP (day use only). Olcott has a nice launch, and marina(s); also the best of fishing along the southern shore.

Is the C Dory the right boat for me?

Another consideration: As kids get older, they get bigger! In 5-10 years, your situation will have changed considerably!

    E0 fuel

In western NY, we have a number of gas stations that sell Pure Gas, 91 octane. It typically costs about 50 cents more per gallon. 2-3 years ago, I was experiencing significant problems with my Honda 40 OB motors. A local mechanic serviced them, and that helped. But he said I needed to...

Steering with twin engines: Differential Throttle Control

I prefer to approach with the starboard side of the C-Dory alongside the dock, coming in slowly and fairly parallel, using only the port-side engine. When close to the spot where I want to pull against the dock, I turn the prow sharply into the dock, but before touching, shift into and hit the...

Also...the hitch receiver may be tightened to fit the ball. I just did this.

I did not double check! Help!

I had a similar experience. Last summer, when my gas line came disconnected at the filter, the boat got washed ashore while I was trying to reconnect. The sensors on the lower transom got banged a bit on the rocks, and the depthfinder quit working. I tried resetting the computer from the...

    Battery charger and controler

I don't think "deep freeze" will hurt the boat itself. I take my batteries out and bring them into the house (i.e., basement). I also remove the Nav equipment and almost everything else in and on the boat. Never had a problem.
