    Raised Helm Seat

Personally, before building a permanent lift, I would experiment with several heights to find the one that was most functional and comfortable.

    Over filling gas tanks

I put small stripes of black tape on each of the tanks as 5-gallon markers. So I can easily see how much gas I have remaining in each tank, but also judge--quite accurately--how much gas to put into each tank.

    Streaks in Gel Coat

Thanks! I have not used a buffer yet (although I have one), only "elbow grease." The idea of using a wet sandpaper is also a good suggestion.

    Streaks in Gel Coat

The accent stripes (dark green: on hull sides and around cabin top) on my CD have streaks and faded spots. I can't seem to get them out. It seems that they are not simply surface oxidation, but embedded in the fiberglass. Any suggestions? Any products to recommend? (THANKS!)

    Lock Thru Question

Our experience with locks is running the Erie Canal. Most of these locks have hanging vertical cables or ropes (we prefer the fixed cables). The boater passes a line (or two) behind the cable and moves it up or down as the water rises or falls. Ideally, I will catch a vertical cable from the...

    Distance between Twin Outboards??

My brother-in-law is building a 23.5' boat similar to the C-Dory. He is planning to power it with twin 40s or 50s. He is asking for info on the distance needed between the motors, to prevent (or minimize) cavitation. Any info or advice would be welcome! Thanks.

Thanks for the lesson on "folding props"! It seems I learn something new everyday.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a "folding prop"?

    carburetor problem Honda BF 90

What "carb cleaner" did you use/do you recommend? Is there a difference between the carb cleaner you would use in an auto, and what should be used in an OB motor?

    question about western Erie Canal

We live in the area, and frequent the Erie Canal. We keep our boat at our cottage on L. Ontario (which we also frequent), near Barker, NY. The best launch in this area is Widewaters Marina in Lockport. Double ramp; free launch and parking; lots of berths and parking (unsecured).

Let's go tubing! OTHER uses for c-dorys

In July, we had three grandsons visit us at our cottage on L. Ontario. They are ages 12, 13 and 16. We borrowed a tube (for a single person) from a neighbor. We had a good length of nice 1/2" rope, but no tow bridle. We simply looped it through one of the rear cleats. Though the tow was...

Hull Paint now dull where cleaned - Help

We have several older RVs. One is a 1973 white fiberglass SCAMP 13' trailer. Due to age (it had always sat outside), the gel-coat on the top had literally worn through. I sprayed white paint (using a linen finish) over the worn areas, then applied Poli-Glow. Two years later, it still looks...

    Gelcoat oxidation?

I have a 1973 13' Scamp trailer. The (white) gelcoat was completely worn through in places (esp. the roof). I spent $10 on white spray paint, and then applied Poli-Glow. My brother applied Poli-Glow to a 1975 (blue and white) Peep Hen I gave him. The blue was heavily oxidized. He applied...

    camper back questions

It's (a lot) easier when it is hot, than when it is cold. The first time is always the hardest...getting the material stretched. After it has been stretched a few times, it gets easier.

    Dinghies on the Erie Canal

I have never seen a dinghy on the Canal. We have enjoyed having our folding bicycles along.

secure parking for truck and trailer

As a "local yokel," I can recommend Seneca Lake SP. It has an entry gate, and is patrolled. There is a marina at the Park, so there are boaters in residence...and typically a number of trucks and trailers parked.
