Glad your friends were there for you during your amazing trip, but they weren't the only ones watching and rooting for you :)

NMEA networking between chartplotter and radio

It all works perfectly now that I found my stupid mistake, which is too embarrassing to share. Ok, I will - I was so intent on cleaning up the wiring and making it all neat and tidy that I missed connecting the Garmin drop cable to the backbone :) I apologize for the post :( I have to say...

NMEA networking between chartplotter and radio

Well, contrary to the advice of Steve-in-SEA who started this post, I decided to go with Ancor instead of Garmin nmea 2000 components because the Ancor cables were the length I needed to make a less messy wiring conglomeration in our small 16. So far, no luck, so I have to go back and check all...

    Best clarity VHF fixed units

I still haven't figured out why the AIS screen is always pointed north, no matter the direction the boat is pointed. However, some of the sporadic activity, i.e., the fact that our boat is not always indicated with the proper black icon as in the photo above, maybe related to the antenna...

    Locating compass on 16' cruiser

Yeah, I think we're going to live with any deviation - the compass is almost 6" diameter, with a huge hole in the helm dash that I don't want to deal with right now. I think it'll be close enough for our purposes :)

That speaker gets pretty rave reviews on Amazon. Not sure we need it yet, and we have limited mounting space - but I was thinking, why couldn't we use a splitter or something to hook the radio up to the existing dual Fusion stereo speakers...

    Best clarity VHF fixed units

Thanks everyone! For some reason I'm not getting updates when there's a reply to one of my posts, it works for the first few days, then stops. Marco Flamingo, I hear you! lol Well, we got the SH GX4200, and have in installed - it's a big unit for our little 16', barely fits under the dash :)...

    C-Dory 16 Angler Purchase Advice

The gortex is much more expensive than the regular thread, by the spool, but maybe not for the whole cover. The only thing I didn't like about the cover is that the thread was white on dark green, maybe they don't do that any more.

Congrats, sounds like you've made a decision :) The sunbrella is a smart choice. When we had a hard time using our sunbrella full cover (we were in an out and in and out working on our 16'), we tried using both just a tarp, then a truck full cover. Neither of those were able to breathe, and...

NMEA networking between chartplotter and radio

Well, hooray, I finally found a couple of reasons to do a nmea 2000 backbone, (and I just wanted to anyway but couldn't find a reason to justify it:) 1. The wiring that would connect the garmin chartplotter to the SH GX2400 radio (to access the radio's AIS receive) are really too short to...

    C-Dory 16 Angler Purchase Advice

We have a sunbrella full cover (made by Angola) that is over ten years old. It looks like it also re: stains, the POs didn't take good care of it, but I can't say enough about the sunbrella fabric - it still sheds water nearly perfectly. We're working on re-waterproofing it this summer, I...

    C-Dory 16 Angler Purchase Advice

oh good, getting on one is the most important thing you can do. As far as my experience in pricing, we've only had ours six months, so I'm certainly no expert, hardly even a novice :) And I appreciate what Thataway said: Prices of boats in general have been inflated during the Covid epidemic...

    Locating compass on 16' cruiser

We've since both taken courses, and know significantly more about chartplotters than we did :) Excited to be putting in a Garmin. Word to the wise (which we were not), do both first! :) Thanks again, Bob, for all of your advice!

    Locating compass on 16' cruiser

lol On our first test run just a few months ago, we didn't even know how the chartplotter worked (shame on us), but we noted we were going NW on the compass. Of course, a big fog descended suddenly. We probably could have figured out the chartplotter, or navigated by phone, but we were in a...

    C-Dory 16 Angler Purchase Advice

Sorry, didn't mean to rain on your parade, it looks like it's in great condition, has a simrad chartplotter or mfd, which are pretty expensive, and overall just very clean. It doesn't, however, have a kicker motor for emergencies. That's about $1500, and a full cover will cost your several...

    Locating compass on 16' cruiser

Thanks! The only reason I can imagine relying on the compass is if we were to lose power during sudden fog, unlikely :) Maybe we'll take it out, install the radio and chartplotter, see how they work, then put it back in to see if it affects either. If it does, maybe I can find a place to put...
