Cell Phone Coverage in San Juan's ?

I call from the north side of Stuart often and have Verizon. One thing we do is go into the menu, go to "Settings and Tools" then "System", then "Network" and select "Home Only". As you get close to the line between the Canadian system and the US tower, the phone will try to seek the Canadian...

    Boat Names

Margaret and are particularly fond of the San Juan Islands and have a small piece of property Stuart Island where we are building a cabin. It's only accessible by boat or plane. I am a relatively new pilot that has found my love for flying is similar to boating. The first time I powered up...

    Crossing Haro Strait to Victoria

Hey Scott, I travel from Seattle to Stuart Island quite a bit and cross the Strait of San Juan de Fuca and Haro Strait quite often. We have experinced everything from flat calm to steep enough waves you can't even idle into them. Pay attention to the weather forecasts and always leave a way...

    Background in Sail?

I have had a Hobie 16 since 1983 (Wings) and a Fuji 40 sloop (Zephyrus) since 1992. Funny how when I'm out in Island Flyer (22 C-Dory) I wish for fast passasge, direct courses, no wind and calm waters. When I'm out in Zephyrus, the more wind the better, breaking waves, no hurry to get anywhere...

    Run Down Battery

I have two batteries with a switch, to isolate one bank for starting. I also got a small solar charger (about $85) at West Marine that is mounted on the cabin top, and the trickle charge keeps them at full charge when the boat is just sitting.

New JRC 1500 Mark II Radar Question

I just installed a JRC Mark II radar and everything is installed and works fine. One thing I notice though is that when the engine is off and everything is quiet, there is a sound that I would have to describe as scraping, but it is not regular (this is when the scanner is transmitting). When...

    Sea Anchors

Another book that is interesting (the emphasis is on sailing, but bigger weather than we would typically see in a C-Dory), is "Surviving the Storm-Coastal and Offshore Tactics" by Steve and Linda Dashew. A piece of additional safety equipment that my wife Margaret and I carry are neoprene...
