19 Angler Question

I am a c-dory newbie and considering a 19 angler. I have a couple of questions:

1. Can I tow this boat with a V6 Tacoma? I have the tow package and it looks as if it is in range.

2. I am looking at a couple of used boats 2-3ish years old. Have any major changes been made since then that would sway my decision?

3. I want to use the boat in near coastal (protected waters) such as the Gulf Islands and San Jauns. What is the smallest kicker I can put on this size boat to limp home with if the main quits. I would probably also use it to troll.

Shan and I recently purchased a 19 Angler. There are a few minor differences from the earlier ones that I know of. The seating configuration has been changed, its really a two person boat, the extra seats that faced towards the stern are now just pads, more for kids than adults. Also, one issue that did cause some confusion for us is with the hydraulic steering, in 2006 it was listed as standard, for 2007 its an option, I paid extra for the hydraulic (due to some issues I had with my 16 Angler). I think the gas tanks may be larger - we have two 25 gallon tanks. Instead of a kicker we have a paddle and a VHF radio and a tow rope, and a anchor.

As far as trailoring - its lighter than the 22, my Volvo can pull it, and its max. towing capacity is around 3300 lbs.

We will probably be at Lopez in May.

saltspring - just wanted to welcome you aboard. Can’t tell you much about the 19 C-Dory, but can tell you this. It does not matter what model you get, you will probably love it. You will not find a better boat for just having fun with.

PS: I like your user name. How did you come up with saltspring?

Thanks for the information, sounds as if a 19 may be in my near future.

We visit Salt Spring Island each year several times to visit family living on the island and when I day dream it is usually about being on the water up there...hence the screen name.

I'm hoping this summer we can put in somewhere on the sound and cruise up there.
 
Hi. I've owned a 16 ft cruiser "C-Pup" since 2003. I enjoy the boat on the ocean, but had there been a 19 foot version then, I might have tried to fit that model into my garage. The 19 ft C-Dory has a wider beam. That may not seem like a big increase over the 16 ft. boat, but it really matters. Maybe it is more stable, I'm sure it is. Where I fault the 16 ft C-Dory most however, is in its weight carry limitation. Go over the tipping point on any boat's maximum weight and you'll not plane. You'll be a displacement hull. The 50 gal gas tank on the 19 ft sure is a lot more gas than I can haul and still carry my wife, fishing tackle and a cooler. I'd say 18 gal is my maximum fuel carry with wife on board, 27 gal if solo by myself and I don't have a couple of coolers full of ice and fish.

My 22 ft C-Dory friends ask my why I would not get the 22 ft cabin boat if I'm thinking of a 19 fot CD. Towing limits on my 6 cyl Honda van is one reason. I also like the open back of my 16 ft CD. It makes boating solo easy, I can hande the helm with one arm and hold a fishing rod in the other. Look at my photos of the canvas I put on C-Pup to see how you can extend the cabin roof with a shade bimini that won't obstruct fishing. I have a camper back canvas to enclose the cockpit and make the entire boat a large cabin for staying overnight on the boat. A 19 ft CD would be an even roomier tent cabin with the same arrangement.

Keith – I agree with your points about the 16. That is why I extended my hull two feet.

I would like to see those photos of the shade bimini on C Pup but my computer just will not go past the 13th photo in your album. It seems to lock up every time, must be something to do with Windows XP. So I guess I will just have to take your word on how great it is.

Keith brings up a very nice advantage of the open back area, particuarly if you like the open air ....and no bulkhead to run thru when a fish hits trolling. I had a 16 Cruiser and loved it, and now have one of the only 14 produced 18' Angler, and....agree again with Keith!! When I put 4 of us, and we average around 225"ish".... in my little 16 with a 60 quart cooler... had to drop props, and it was a bit dicy at times at the helm. Had to think and watch things a bit more rather than just foing with the flow. The 18 with its added length, AND WIDER BEAM, really helped this much more than I would have thought. Back to just going with the flow again. Still same 50hp rating and it handles it fine.

The 19 Angler is a very nice boat...but... rumor has it that the 22Angler is about to come out with the open back and no bulkhead wall..... and I feel sure your current tow vehicle will pull it fine...if you do not fill the boat up with "stuff"... those Toyota's are tuff!! But, be sure to get good breaks on the trailer....

So, we may soon have 4 options on the open back C-Dory Anglers....3 of which may all be in production next year.... 16, 19 & 22...??? I do not see them bringing back the 18Angler.. you can more than likely with todays ways of doing things produse a 19/22 hull for the same monies it would cost to build the 18.....but, the 18 is one sweet, very economical boat to run!!

saltspring... you might be interested in this with it being on the east coast. Particuarly if you are going to live near your ramp, a nice old beat up truck to pull'r back and forth...saving your Toyota for the long life.

A 22 ft Angler with no bulk head would be nice for most days on the ocean in SoCal. I use to think I wanted the inside stove, mainly to make coffee or cup noodles, but now days I carry canned coffee. Just a microwave and small grill that fits in a fishing rod holder is all I'd want to spend a couple of nights on board while fishing.
