Saturday I was fishing at the chicken ranch out of newport when the current got bad I had to usemy kicker, 2007 honda 9.9, every two minutes or so it would just stop, i noticed it was not pumping water through the pee hole, with the motor this new I am hopeing it is only pluged up any suggestions?

It may not be a problem if that motor's thermostat is designed to cut off water flow. My old Merc 15 kicker did the same thing and I found out it was normal. Les Lampman at EQ would know for sure. Good luck, Mike.

I gave my son-in-law my old Honda 8 classic and he had a similar problem. When he stopped by one of the dealers that we go to, the mechanic asked if he had opened the vent on the gas tank. OOOPS, no he hadn't and that was the issue. Yours may be similar.

It is not unusual for the motors to not pump water out of the "pee" hole, as that is a favorite place for spiders and other critters to make a home. I would run a pipe cleaner or small wire tie up the tube to see if that makes a difference.

If the motor was not pumping, it would be obviously hot. I ran my new Honda 8 on ear muffs, ruined the impeller, and wow did it get hot fast. I suspect that you purchased from Sportcraft, so they will be able to help you if there is a problem that you can't resolve. I have had good results working with them. Good crew.

I'll bet it's the tank vent too. I've found that an appropriate sized piece of line that's used in weed whips works well for cleaning out the indicator nipple, lines and into the water jacket. I have twin 40's and one never needs cleaning and the other one always does. Go figure!

I had a honda that was still pumping, but not well. During idle the problem would occur (shutoff), but not during high throttle. I was sure it was the carb. Well, it turned out that I took the lower end off, and inspected the water pump impellor. It was not good, and didn't pumpsufficient water at idle to keep the motor cool -- thus the shut off. It is possible that that is your problem. Regards, Ron

Let's say that you did forget to open the vent on the fuel tank. If you can continue to run, and start to collapse the tank, can you damage the fuel pump or other parts?

When did the Cooling System become connected to the Fuel System????????? :wink  :beer

The point I was making is that it is highly probable that the engine shut down because of the overheat sensor shutting it off during the trolling (since this thread started by the comment that the engine was not pumping water through the pee hole). On 2000 and newer Hondas, there is an overheat sensor that shuts the engine off when overheating happens. If the motor is not pumping enough water during idle, it will overheat, and shutoff to protect the engine. I don't think that it has been established that the shutdown is due to lack of fuel. Ron

My Honda kicker is currently having the impeller replaced. Yes, it will run raggedly and shutdown due to insufficent water flow.

Estimated repair cost is $200. It would be cheaper if were something as simple as the tank vent being closed.

If you are using muffs to flush your newer model Honda kickers, I recommend that you read your owners manual about engine flushing. I also learned the hard way that it is not the recommended procedure. I chewed up an impeller with 10ish hours on a 2006 8 horse. The dealer (Sportcraft) and repaired it on warranty, but the manual is clear that muffs should not be used.
