22' Classic - any issues?

My current boat is a 17’ Boston Whaler Montauk.

I am considering an upgrade to a 22' Classic with 4 stroke engine and kicker due to price advantage relative to the 22' Cruisers. There appears to be some structural problems with the 22' Cruisers manufactured after 2000. I use my boat about 150 hours per season. My intended goal is to trailer/boat from Seattle to Sitka through the Inside Passage within the next 5 years. Are there any issues that I should be on the look out for with the pre 87 Classics.

What I think I am referring to may be quality control issues with post year 2000 boats. Perhaps I am mistaken. That is why I am asking the question.

I have a 2005, and find it to be a solid boat. Yes, like any other device built by people, there are going to be a couple of mistakes here and there, but all things said, these boats are extremely well made. I am aware of two boats that have been replaced by the factory, but my firm belief is that these are rare exceptions. If you look on the factory album, you will see one of the boats that the factory took back crossing the Columbia River bar in huge rollers. That was after it was returned. I don't see a structural problem in that boat. I can not comment on the other boat, as I do not know its history.

Would I buy another in this range of years, YES. Like any boat purchase, I would either go over it with a fine tooth comb, or pay a surveyor to do it for me, but again that would be for ANY boat.

Because the folks on CBrats love their boats, and love the CBrat community, you will see candid discussions of things that are found on these boats. That is in the spirit of sharing and making things better for the other owners. I truly believe that you would see horror stories if there was an organization for some of the high volume production boats.

I second what wondering sagebrush says. Fine boat. Would buy it again. We've had it since new and a few problems but nothing major. Warranty covered all of it. I would suggest if your thinking of new, purchasing locally as I have had a few factory repairs and having it serviced by someone local that knows my boat is a great asset.

It is my belief that each boat is unique. How someone has used it in the past, maintained it, etc is going to determine a lot of the issues that you might have down the road. One thing that is true though - CD owners typically love their boats and take good care of them.
 
Our boat is a 2006 22 Cruiser model, and it had one cosmetic issue when new which was repaired immediately. Beyond that, it has been flawless in all ways. We have never been back to the dealer or any other shop. Allof the routine maintenance work is easily done on the trailer, so I just do it! We have been from one end of Puget Sound to the other, and far up the Canadian coast without any issues with the boat or its added equipment (engine radar, chartplotter, radio, camperback etc). This is thousands of water miles, and probably a thousand of towed miles on the road too. We would replace her with another 22 Cruiser in a heartbeat. It's hard to complain about 4 mpg at speed, and displacement mileage at 8-10 mpg. We've made whole trips at 8mpg by going slow and enjoying the world around us. Rain or shine, warm or cold, it's hard to beat the comfort of the cabin!
