22 versus 23 cruiser

hi everyone.
I am thinking of buying a 22 cruiser in two years. Now that the 23 is going to be made, how much more will it cost (if at all) and what are the pros and cons versus the two. Also, how much would the financing be?

The true answer is no-one knows. We haven't heard any word when the 23 or 26 will be built and released nor what it wil sell for. Maybe we'll hear something from the factory on this but I wouldn't hold my breath. We'll see what they say at the boat show or the party.
 
There is one thing certain--that in two years you will be two years older, and will have lived without the joys of owning a C Dory during those two years. Life is short. We dont' know what the state of the boating economy will be--or even if there will be new models. Most likely they will be more expensive than now. Most likely financing will be more expensive than it is today. (But I am one who feels that boats should not be financed). My personal preference is to buy what I can afford to buy today and use it until I can afford something else. Plus there are many very good things to be said about the used C dories.
 
you are right. I spend the summers in washington and each year it gets harder to not buy a boat.

the main idea i like about the "23" is a bigger cockpit area. If the 22 is 4 by 6, then any idea what the 23 cockpit area will be? I just wanted to be able the sit 4 people in chairs in the cockpit.

Bob is spot on. We would only add:

Buy the smallest boat to fit your needs. Bigger often isn't better, unless you prefer bigger headaches with launching/retrieving, trailering, anchoring, fuel costs ... etc.
 
Not official word, but you just might see a 23V at the Atlanta Boat Show..........................

Buy smaller chairs. :wink: 4 chairs in either of those cockpits is still gonna be snug, but you make it work. (We once had 7 in the cockpit of our 25 - and it was very close quarters) I feel that the 22s or 25s are very comfortable 2 person boats; certainly you can make more fit (as evidenced by Bill and El's trip to Alaska with their son and grandson onboard). I've seen many circumstance of folks buying a boat based on who they think will want to come along, but when it's not your boat the interest often wains.

As always, Dr. Bob cuts right to the heart of the matter. If you wait to buy "the" boat, you've missed out on time on the water, and that much more experience to know if you made the right choice. Even with prior boat experience, any "next" boat is a bit of a leap of faith.

And if you take a Great Leap Forward of Faith in a C-Dory you can be assured that your investment will be returned virtually 100% *, dollar for dollar, when you're ready to repeat the process on a bigger model!

I test drove a CC23 with 5 people total onboard and two of us were large. The boat is a great boat. Having owned a 22 CD since 1991 I had a good base for comparison.

The 23 is larger inside as it is a full 8ft wide and the cabin top is higher allowing vision to the outside while standing.

The hull form is better at cutting the waves that the 22 CD and the ride is smoother.

As I recall, the 23 was about $10,000 more that a CD22.
 
The 23 is 1000 lbs heavier and takes up to 200 hp instead of 110. Its ?advantages? are mostly that it is bigger but those are disadvantages also. Still can't beat the 22 for easy trailering. launching. etc. Now that 26 with the cockpit deck/hull would be dandy to keep in the marina.
