50 HP Honda alternator?

Does anyone know if you can put a larger alternator on the 50 HP Honda engine? It has a 10 amp 125 watt alternator. Their 75 HP engine has a 16 amp 202 watt alternator on it. Will it fit on the 50 HP engine? If not are there after market alternators that will fit? I have checked with the two local dealers and neither one seems to know.

Never heard of this being done, but makes some sense, since our lifestyle usages on these boats seem to demand a lot of amp-hours for some folks.


Maybe somneone else will know for sure, but I really doubt the larger unit would fit under the cowling.

The Hondas seem to have smaller alternators than some other brands in certain model ranges.

For me, one important deciding factor in outboard selection is the relative output of the alternator compared to other brands.

Might be a lot easier to add anoter big house battery so that there was more "juice" in the reserve tank, so to speak.

Or--- got room for a Honda 1000Aie wonder generator? 28 lbs, about 1000 watts, or 8.3 amps and very quiet!

I would suggest you send an email or PM to Les Lampman at E.Q. Marine to ask the most knowledgeable source around.

If you don'st get an answer within a few days, ask his dad, Dusty / Sawdust, to go over and put the question to him at the shop over a cuppa Joe. The old man doesn't have enough to do anymore, anyway!

Sawdust, if you could do that for me, I would be forever grateful to you.

The Honda 8 HP with electric start has a larger alternator than the 50 HP.
50 HP = 10 amp 126 watt
8 HP = 12 amp 148 watt

With the 16' cruiser I am limited on space. I have a start & house battery and I do not have room for a larger battery. Don't really know where to put a gen set and I am pushing my load capacity now.

With the electronics and other equipment I have on-board, the engine takes too long to recharge the batteries when the house battery is used for any length of time, without the engine running.

The 75 HP has a 16 amp 202 watt alternator. If it would fit on my engine it should solve my problem.
 
Hi Dave , I don't how old is your engine , but if ever you get a replacement motor one day, you should look in investing in a Yamaha 50 hp , altenator is a 17 amps , the block is 4 cyl , I install they Optima Troll Fury batteries it come with a nice case that old both batteries, they are house and strart batteries, I just love them . The are cell batteries , no fume, and also they are lighter. those engines are so quiet that I almost never shut them down ,talk to a tech at Yamaha told me not to worry about trolling all day or idling all day they are build for that kind of abuse .

Hi Dave , I don't know how old your engine is , but if you ever think about buying a new one , you should look at Yamaha 50Hp they have a 17 amps alternator , and are 4cyl . I installed the Troll Fury Optima batteries on SEARAM . Those batteries are house and strart batteries . Those cell batteries don't let any gas out like all standard battteries, and they are lighter too . I just love mine . My engines are so quiet that I let them idle most of my days in the water. I Talked to a Tech at Yamaha and he told me not to worry about trolling all day or idling those motors. Change the oil and enjoy!

I bought the boat used in July of last year. The boat is a 2002 with a 2001 Honda Engine. It had 15 hrs on it when I got it. I have been out in it four times and only 55 or so hours on it now. Hopefully, I have a ways to go before the engine will need replacing. I am trying to convince Terri that we need to get a 22' cruiser.

I was told the Honda was a quite engine but on a 16' cruiser it does get to be annoying after a while. Probably because the cabin is open and the engine is only a little over four feet behind you.

I just added the start battery in September of last year. When it comes battery time, I will look at the Troll Fury Optima batteries & maybe before then, just to save some weight.

You are right Dave your Honda is like they Energizer batterie commercial the will keep on ticking for along long time! the Troll fury only come with those two batterie as a kit, but you can buy an Optima that is house and start batterie that as more capacity than one batterie in the Troll Fury, also you can put the batterie in any positions, on there side or upside down.

Obviously you have much better "hearing" than I, Dave. I had the 50 HP Honda on our 16' and always had to look back to see if it was running because I couldn't hear it. (Must be my too many years of "auditory abuse ie: sirens, gunfire, chainsaws, etc. etc......I wear hearing protection now, but it is too little, too late!).
 
I have done damage to my hearing also, although I don't need hearing aids. Almost all damage by way of chainsaws. Ran a Stihl 084 with a 60" bar for a-while when I was cutting oldgrowth timber. Now that is a loud saw and feels like you have an outboard engine in your hands.

Some of the ear plugs we used in the woods, looked just like a suppository sticking out of our ears.
 
Maybe a better question might be what can you do about the regulators on the alternators we have. If they are regulated you are only getting full output for a minute or two before they start to taper down. If you could bypass the regulator and monitor the battery condition even a 10 amp alternator would give you a lot of amps to use.

Nothing you can do economically to increase the output on the 50 Honda. Custom coils, perhaps (spendy), but the regular coils are under the flywheel and the larger engines have larger flywheels etc.

Sorry I couldn't do better! Agree that 10 amps is pretty skimpy nowdays...
