This just happened a few days ago. We often go fishing in this area where the Fraser River spills into Georgia Strait. There is a breakwater that extends out to a lighthouse and when the tide is high the breakwater is awash. Apparently the navigator on this vessel tried to "cut the corner" and instead of going around the lighthouse, went between it and the breakwater. oops....

it seems as if every year someone has to not pay attention to charts (chart plotters these days) and depth sounders! A large power boat (about 80') goes on the rocks in the PNW!

I worked in a business near the Ballard locks that monitored 16 on the VHS. If you are familiar with the area, after leaving the locks there is a day marker surprisingly far out because of a shoal extending out from Westpoint. One day we heard a May Day and the captain reported he had struck something and was taking on water with his wife and kids on board. This was pre cell phone, so the conversation was all on the radio. After about 10 minutes the captain said "Nevermind." His wife had walked ashore. Beware of water that looks deep.

Every summer, the rip rap along the sand island, at the south end of the Swinomish Channel, will claim a few small boats and at least one 45' that
I know of. :crook

When the tide is high the rocks are covered and that nice sandy beach looks so inviting. :embarrased
