Alaska bulkhead on a 19 angler

Hi Im new here. I have been looking at the 19 angler and would like to know if any one has thought of putting a Alaska bulkhead on one. We do a lot of winter trolling. It would be easier to heat if it was enclosed other than the fabric closure. I have heard that fabric is hard to deal with in freezing temps.

10 years later, the bulkhead is holding strong and only need some recent TLC to stay looking good.

We normally have the doors wide open because we keep a permanent enclosure on the back but we have used those doors to lockup a few times for security when leaving the boat unattended at "less secure' docks. They would be great for holding heat in and the width of the double doors really is important. If the opening was as narrow as the standard bulkhead door, I would have removed the bulkhead at least partially for our use. Feels like one big room with those double doors. Thanks Joe!

Haha, I was very close to one in Gloucester, Ma. The ad went up and I called the broker the next day. It had a deposit that morning from someone else. Crazy.

Since then I haven't seen anything east of the Mississippi. :)

Sorry to derail the thread from the OP. I like the idea of a hard door (bulkhead I guess?! ) also. Pretty cool

Yeah its been done - C-Dory did it themselves but somehow the stupid boat got 3 feet longer.....
 
Sure the solid bulkhead is classy, but the canvas dropdown works very well in all seasons too. Get a nice stable Mr. Buddy propane heater, crack a window, and off you go. Just be careful on that slippery ramp.
 
I had a 2 pc zippered down the middle with isinglass made for my 16. I think it was about $400.

I prefer a three piece with a rollup 'door'

Blueback-16': I have a 2 piece Velcro down the middle which works for us. I made a stainless curtain rod for them to slide to the sides on.
I find your history of ownership contrary to the trend of footitis -25>22>16 wow must be a story here.

This would make your boat feel much smaller in a permanent sort of way. An open back to the cockpit is a tradeoff, but your boat has traded off three feet of what wasn't a huge cockpit already. The open back makes that whole space contiguous. There are ways to make curtains work better. I'd be certain to exhaust those options before I made a permanent modification and spend extra $$ to have a result less satisfying than an easier and more flexible option (like adding a small opening in the curtain and increasing the size of your heater).
