Alder Bay Vancouver Island

This last August long time fishing partner Duayne Mckinney and I traveled to the north end of Vancouver Island and stayed at Alder Bay Resort. We fished and cruised the Broughton Islands for two weeks. What a place to say the least. Can't wait to go back again. After that we traveled to the south end of the Island and stayed at Pedder Bay Resort for two weeks. We just took in the sites and did very little fishing their. Here is a video of the trip.

Pedder Bay is one of my local stomping grounds and I have been up to the Broughtons each year for the last 5 for a kayaking trip (launched once from Alder Bay and it was nice). Glad you enjoyed your visit!

I think there is something wrong wth the last 5 minutes of the video - much of it was black for me. The first 10 mins were great!

Mike, nice video, well, I'm not a fisherman so don't know half of what is going on, but you sure are catching fish.... and some orca shots too. Pretty nice.

Even a shot of my home marina. (John Wayne).

There is a blank spot, from 9:25 until 12:59 and then the humpbacks show up. Pretty cool. Nice editing on the video, (picture in picture and underwater, too.) Even some C-Dory pix. Good stuff. Thanks.

Thanks Harvey, yea it looks like I left a short piece of video on the end. When I processed the video I forgot to take it out. Duhhhhh. That's what happens when you get it half done and leave it for awhile. Senior moment. :)

Wow. looks like a great trip. I hear a lot about cruising in the broughtons but not about fishing. Was it easy to find the fish or did you have to really know the area? Also what type of camera did you use?

Tom

I use a cannon vixia hfs20 video camera for everything above water and a GoPro for under water.

I was lucky to meet up with a fellow when I arrived that put me on to some good locations for Halibut. The salmon locations were even easier yet as you just follow the fleet every morning leaving Alder. The salmon season for 2012 was really bad. Not a lot being caught so we spent most of our time chasing halibut. In 12 days we caught 31 halibut. Unfortunately you can only keep two a year so there was a lot of catch and release. I think the toughest part fishing for halibut was learning the best time of day and the currents flowing through the straight. We never anchored up. Always free drifted. Most of the time the best halibut fishing was in water over 300 feet deep. For that reason we free drifted.

The prawn fishing was very good and everyone in camp shared the places to go for them. We spent a lot of time chasing whales and boy did we find them. We had one breach about a 100 yards from the boat. We missed getting it on film but what a show.

All and all a great trip to the Broughtons.

Mike
