Anchor winch

AKA windlass.
Has anyone tried one of these $200+ range winches?
They say they’re for anchors up to 45lbs and have 100’ of 3/16” rode on them.
None of the specs listed indicate a tensile strength of the rode but 3/16” seems a little thin.
Seems like they’re new on the market but was hoping some one has tried one.

I can see a place for an inexpensive one on a light boat not used in the salt. If you are looking at the Trac Outdoors model, I don't hate it. I bet it would be great for shallow fresh water lakes and streams for fishing in many situations. For a CD 22/25 or a Tomcat used in deep water and the salt, I think you want something more substantial.

Surveyor 2. You need to update your profile as to what type of C Dory you own and what area you boat in. This helps us give some intelligent information. Also give a model or link to what you are specifically referring to in reel type of anchor windlasses.

There are a lot of cheap reel windlass on Amazon--the one most likely to be used on a C Dory is the Lewmar:CWR 400. It has stainless reel--but plastic covering. Look at the negative reviews. It has 35 meters (115) of 6 mm (1/4") line and no chain. This would allow you to anchor safely in about 7 feet of water. The 1/4 or as you mentioned 3/6" is fine for clothes line, but not for a boat the size of the C dory. Granted you could use Dyneema line, in 1/4" which costs $1.62 a foot, or for the 100 feet would be $162. To have the 200 to 300 feet would be in the $340 to $520 range.

Although said to be salt water tolerant (and one of the few which is) it has a number of weaknesses. The other ones are suited only to freshwater boats such as bass boats and Jon boats.

The E-Z Anchor Puller EZ-ISS-4090 would be the closest that you could consider for the C Dory. They start at $ 1900 for up to a 21' boat.
