Astoria Sturgeon?

As another option to the halibut, I took a trip to Astoria last year to try to fish the estuary for sturgeon. I'm well familiar with fishing in the Columbia below Bonneville dam, but didn't really know where to fish in Astoria. We hung out fairly close to town just up river from the bridge, with limited success.

Does anyone out there have good experience with getting deeper into the estuary, maybe some favorite spots or generally which areas produce and which areas don't? Also, I read a lot about using light tackle, which is foreign to me having fished the heavy current for so long. How are you guys setting up your tackle when you're in the estuary?

Any and all tips welcome!

Best,
Ben

just follow Tyboo Mike and do what he does, he's the sturgeonator. A sturdy salmon rig with a slider for the weight, a swivel leader & hook will do the job

Mike is one of the C-Brat "nerds" here. and generally a PM will get him. hit the PM button under the thread, and use Tyboo for a username and I think that will get to him.

One fish for all day today. And I mean all day - 12 hours dock to dock. It is easier to stay out on the boat when it has a TV, coffee maker, heat and a microwave. Especially after a long hectic week.

We managed one keeper over Memorial Day weekend up by Bonneville dam as well. The shad numbers are really starting to increase, so I think we might head there at the end of June instead of Astoria. Oversize have to be following all those shad.

Nice fish though! About 42"?

Charlie-

Closer to 70"!

You have to remember Mike is nearly 7 feet tall for comparison!

(No racial put-down intended for the Globetrotters, but both barrels for Mike: short and old, not to mention the shining sky from above.
Good that we love each other enough to know we can get away with such ribbing!!!) (Old? I turned 70 yesterday!)

Charlie knows his dinosaur fish! It measured right about 50" from the tail fork to the nose. It also had a DFW tag on it. I submitted the number and should get an email with some info about him.

Out here again today. Nothing yet but it sure is nice.

Charlie doesn't know squat! He saw your Facebook post with the fish dimensions on it!
