Back to the Cove

what a crazy year so far, I've been pulling a double shift at the school (30 credit loads) and am about burned out on school, the state of AK labeled me a criminal because I hooked a few halibut and handed the rod off to a young Blackhawk helicopter pilot that was headed to Iraq and had never fished before (I set the hook so they're now my fish and come March F&G is knocking on my door saying I was overlimit and falsifying my logbook and they must make an example of me...oh joy). Tonight I go to graduation and then come morning I'm off to the summer job, where, I don't care if you're in a wheel chair, 96 years old, 8 years or or blind, you'll have to hustle up, grab that rod and set your own hook :)

I still think I work for a quality outfit but it sure makes it tough when some vindictive goverment dweeb thinks we're running some giant blackmarket halibut operation out the backdoor.

By Gawd, this year I'm going to make sure I get back early enough to hitch up the boat and take a proper vacation...been trying to get back to Lake Powell for a few years now....gonna do it

any of you C-Dorians headed to Elfin Cove, look me up, so far;
*Casey, dinner for one

Well, don't set a place at the table for me just yet.

I departed Lake Montezuma on Tuesday, headed North on I-17; on Time, on Target.

All was going well for exactly eight miles when I blew the oil cooler on the truck, which in turn took out the EGR valve assembly and put nasty black sludgy crap throughout my diesel engine. The only good news was that I was in a good cell phone area; and CLOSE TO HOME!

The tow truck carried my now-dead F350 to the Ford hospital in Cottonwood, and the next day they estimated repairs at an astounding $5800 (no typo) dollars. Yeoww!

It appears my extended warranty was a good move; and since it's a "No Deductible" policy they're only going to 'nick me for about $750. Swell.

But at present, the Alaska trip for 2010 is a Wash.

...you needn't leave the light on for me (this year).

Best,
Casey

ouch, that's a bummer....man, these newer rigs are so durn expensive to fix, I've often wondered what kids & less advantaged folks will be driving in the years to come. When I was a kid you could buy a decent rig for $800 and if it broke it was usually under a $100 to fix it.

I hope you can still salvage some of your vacation

Love your country, fear your government.

Ken,

That's an interesting buy/repair ratio ... 8:1.

When I bought the truck in 2005 it was about $40-42K as I recall (...I've done my best to forget). So now a person might have to consider a major repair costing 1/8th of the purchase price (e.g. $5K+). Breath taking, to say the least. ...but that's exactly what I'm seeing (thankfully I have an extended warranty that looks like it'll kick-in for most of it).

Inflation is just another measure of the constant devaluation of the USD; but don't get me on that soapbox.

Best,
Casey

Ken

We were hoping to see Casey at Elfin Cove and sure going to miss not seeing him there. If we don't run into similar problem as Casey we should be in your area soon after the middle of July. Hope to leave here by July 1st with a slow road trip north followed by even slower on the water. Will be launching out of Skagway again.

Looking forward to meeting you Ken,

Jay

Hi Jay,

We'll be around the Icy Strait, Glacier Bay, and Cross Sound area from the second week of July through about mid-August. We'll look for you.

Hi Ken,

How's things at the Cove after the 6/19 fire? Which lodge are you working with? How would I find you to say Hi?

Ken, et al...

It appears that my trip to Southeast for this year is a 'bust.

I departed (again) yesterday, but only got as far as Flagstaff (57 miles up the road) this time before the F350 6.0L diesel died on me. Low oil pressure warning (I suspect it's only the sensor) but this mishap effectively checkmates my AK boating for this season. Drat. (...trust me, I'm coming up with all Kinds of new four-letter words!)

Best,
Casey
