Boat Covers and Storage

I am debating whether to store my new CD-22 under a cover at the marina in Southern California or at a new indoor storage facility near my house. I have heard that using boat covers can cause mold to grow underneath the covers. Do any of you have experience with this. It costs twice as much to keep the boat indoors than outdoors under a cover. Any information would be appreciated.

I think you always want to have some air circulation under the cover. Also get one or two of those electric dehumidifiers. The ones I have are about 14 " square and 4" high and plug into 110. They just put our a little warmth and keep the humidiity under control.
 
Patty here. We have kept Daydream under a custom Sunbrella cover, summer and winter here in the northwest, and have had no problems. We have honored our vow to put the boat in the water every month so the cover has come off at least that often. By the way, the cover is for sale for $500, it's cabernet and fits a 22' with no radar or arch.
 
We have a $unbrella cover for Amelia Anne. No mold, mildew, or anything else bad has happened in two summer seasons. Winter she's in a large barn at the fairgrounds.

If you keep it near home in storage, at first you will use it a great deal because it's new, but later on, your use will taper off because it will become a chore hooking up, trailering to the launch ramp, launching, and the reverse at the end of the day. Been there and did that for many years, and found my boating days were becoming fewer and father between, until I finally sold my last boat. Then I discovered Sealife and Channel Islands Landing. Safe, convienent, inexpensive. without the wear and tear on my car or trailer. And they do all the launching and retreiving by sling for me. I use my boat ALOT, but if I had to trailer all the time, and use the launch ramp, I would not be boating a fraction of the time.

That's just my opinion, Scott, but it comes with experience.

Well if cover wins, and you have the "Tall Top" option, I have a King Marine full $unbrella cover still in the box I'll let go for a non-spendy price.

I've got a high top on order, but it will also have the radar arch. Is it compatible, and how much? Oh, and color?

I really agree with Mike. The easier it is to use, the more you use it. Best of all is to have the boat berthed in a covered marina so all you have to do is drive over there, walk down the dock, and turn the key, at least for freshwater. I can see where in saltwater, dry storage or a boat lift--such as a Hydrohoist or one of the new inflatable air cushions, would be a great feature to allow storage out of the water. The very best would be to have your own covered berth in your lakeside front yard with a Hydrohoist or cable hoist. Add a patio deck out on the dock and a hot tub. And the beer/drinks refrigerator. And my dog and my wife, in either order (!!!) Joe.
