Bumper trim problem HELP/RECOMMENDATIONS

Can anyone help me with this problem? After my last trip I noticed that the bumper strip on the rear port side has popped loose . Photo's posted at this URL. Has anyone else had this problem. How did you fix it? Wonder what caused it? Is this a factury issue. Almost seems it was attached in a bind!

Hey Joy, It looks to me like your back rivets let go. You need to pull the rubber bumper off and out of the way then drill out the rivet or rivets and replace with a larger SS rivets. Make sure you put lots of sealant behind the metal track so it won't leak through into the boat.
You might be able to use a bolt and washer on the inside instead of a rivet.
Good luck ! I have to have my entire rub rail on both sides replaced, major project ! My dealer is taking care of it for me.

I had a similar problem (not quite the same), caused by hitting a dock too hard (= my fault).

I suggest...(1) you pull the rubber away from the metal strip, so you can access the fasteners underneath; (2) replace the old fasteners with small bolts or large rivets (appropriately sized), and then (3) cut the rubber to length, if needed (it may have been stretched) so it fits around the bend and up to the end of the metal strip.

The bad news: this involves a bit of work. The good news: it is repairable!
 
I had the same happen on my 19. The factory fixed both sides, no problem. I think they are now bolted, not riveted. Robbi

I could show you an almost identical photo on my 1998...even on the same corner! I was considering the bolt/washer option for repair, it seems more secure than installing another pop rivet.

While on this subject, does anyone know where I can buy a replacement end cap for the rub rail? Mine is missing.

Interesting turn of events:

My 1987 C-Dory 22 Cruiser has through bolted machine screws on the rub rail.

Apparently, somewhere down the years, they switched over to pop rivets....

And now are back to through bolting.....

Live and learn!

(Actually, stainless steel or monel pop rivets are pretty good, as long as you use hefty backing plates (washers) and set them properly. Aluminum is nowhere near as strong as the other two, maybe10-20%.)
